New Jersey American Water has begun replacing water main pipes located on Dunellen’s northeast side. The project, which is costing over $1.16 million, will replace 4,340 feet of 4-inch and 6-inch cast iron mains installed in the 1940s with 8-inch ductile iron pipes. Roads affected are Jefferson Avenue (from North Avenue to First Street), and First and Second Streets (from Jefferson Avenue to Washington Avenue). Dunellen among towns under drought watch

Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin today issued a drought watch for New Jersey’s Northeast, Central, and Coastal North water supply regions, urging residents in the affected areas to voluntarily conserve water and for the rest of the state to practice wise water use due to continued dry weather and above-average temperatures. Dunellen is part of the Central region along with other towns in Middlesex, Somerset, and Union counties. The drought watch is prompted by continued rainfall deficits that have decreased reservoir, ground water and streamflow levels in the three regions. The purpose of the watch is to raise public awareness, formally alert all water suppliers in the region of the situation, and to seek voluntary cooperation to preserve existing supplies in the affected regions, with water demand still high. Your Tap Water May Taste Different this Winter

As part of its annual pipeline maintenance program, New Jersey American Water (NJAW) will temporarily change the water treatment process at its Raritan-Millstone Water Treatment Plant in Bridgewater and at its Canal Road Water Treatment Plant in Somerset from chloramines (a combination of ammonia and chlorine) to free chlorine. The change will begin on February 1, 2015 and last through March. During this period, customers may notice an increase in the taste and smell of chlorine in their water. NJAW will continuously monitor water quality to ensure that it meets or surpasses federal and state drinking water standards.
