Now all curbside recyclable items, such as bottles, cans, paper and small flat cardboard can be mixed together in a single recycling container as they are kept separate from trash. Recycling for the Holidays

The Middlesex County Improvement Authority’s Recycling Division has issued an advisory regarding recycling holiday items.

“While our recycling brochures are very detailed, we can’t cover everything,” said MCIA Recycling Manager Ed Windas. “There are specialty items that are synonymous with this time of year, and we want residents to know how to properly dispose of them.”

Products like greeting cards, envelopes and gift wrap are generally classified under mixed paper, with one major caveat, Windas said. “We do not want nor can we take foil wrapping paper,” he said. Even though most ornaments are primarily manufactured using glass or plastics, the Division also cautions residents against heaping these embellishments in with the recyclables. “Those are also on the not-wanted list,” Windas said. Today marked the last day Dunellen residents needed to separate their recycling. As of March 30, 2015, the Middlesex County Improvement Authority (MCIA) is transitioning to SINGLE-STREAM RECYCLING COLLECTION. For participating municipalities including Dunellen, this eliminates the need for sorting recyclables prior to curbside pick-up. Acceptable items include newspaper and mixed paper, cardboard, cans, bottles and plastics. At approximately 65%, Middlesex County has exceeded the state’s 60% recycling rate for the sixteenth year and was the state’s #1 recycling county for five of those years, according to the latest report from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Recycling Schedule Announced for 2015

According to a press release posted on the Middlesex County Improvement Agency (MCIA) website, there is one big change with its recycling program. Although Dunellen residents will continue to expect recycling pickups every other Wednesday, there will be no printed schedule sent to households in 2015. In the press release, Ed Windas, MCIA division recycling manager cites the reason. “It really does fly in the face of our mission here. On one hand, we’re looking to reduce the public’s carbon footprint; and on the other, we’re contributing to the problem. Continue Reading →
