The Raritan Valley Rail Coalition (RVRC) was created in 1998 as a non-profit, bi-partisan group to advocate for a “one seat” ride from the Raritan Valley Line (RVL) into Penn Station, New York. In addition to a decrease in travel time and the anxiety of switching trains in Newark, the “one-seat” ride has been shown to increase property values in towns where there is a stop. In the past few years, NJ Transit has used its new dual-powered locomotives to take RVL riders straight into the Big Apple during mid-day and evening hours on weekdays. The RVRC is looking to complete its main goal, having all RVL trains go all the way to New York, including peak weekday hours and weekends. The next meeting of the Raritan Valley Rail Coalition (RVRC) will be on Monday, Oct. 26. Somerset County Freeholder and RVRC Chairman Peter S. Palmer and other trustees will report on the progress to date on increasing one-seat ride service; efforts to promote the importance of the Gateway Project; and the need to identify a long-term, stable funding source for the state Transportation Trust Fund and to construct critical rail infrastructure projects, such as the Hunter Flyover and the Portal Bridge. The trustees will provide an update on the one-seat ride initiative’s website (www.raritanvalleyrail.com) and social-media campaign. Newark Penn Station’s Track 5 to be closed on evenings

Effective immediately, Newark Penn Station’s Track 5 platform will be closed evenings from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. through 2015 as necessary due to platform reconstruction work and other improvements. During this time, Raritan Valley Line customers will be directed to board from alternate platforms. Customers should check departure monitors and listen for station announcements for track assignments during this time. During the completion of this phase of work, customers will continue to board Raritan Valley Line trains from the east end of the Track 5 platform during the day. State Transportation Trust Fund to be discussed at RVRC meeting

Assemblyman John S. Wisniewski, chairman of the New Jersey Assembly Transportation and Independent Authorities Committee, will be the featured speaker at the Raritan Valley Rail Coalition (RVRC)’s meeting on January 26. He will give an update on the state Legislature’s latest efforts to increase funding for the Transportation Trust Fund. The fund is projected to run out of money by July 15. The Rail Coalition trustees also will provide an update on the initiative’s website (www.raritanvalleyrail.com) and social-media campaign. They will present highlights from the January 12th debut of weekday evening one-seat ride service to Penn Station New York and from their recent meeting with NJ Transit on the one-seat ride initiative.
