County to Offer Backyard Farmer Workshop

The Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County is holding a new program for those interested in implementing farming techniques on their residential property. Raising Chickens in Your Backyard will take place on Wednesday, June 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the EARTH Center in Davidsons Mill Pond Park, 42 Riva Ave., South Brunswick NJ. This free workshop will be hosted by Dr. Joseph Heckman, who has been raising chickens on pasture since 2005. Dr. Heckman will discuss many details on raising backyard poultry starting with baby chicks, coops, feeder systems, sourcing feed, protection from predators, and the collection and care of eggs. Middlesex County History Day, May 31

History lovers of all ages are invited to East Jersey Olde Towne Village for a site-wide celebration filled with demonstrations, performances, and other family-friendly activities. The first Middlesex County History Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 31. Olde Towne Village is located inside Johnson Park at 1050 River Road in Piscataway. Demonstrations will include blacksmithing, wool carding, yarn spinning, weaving, chair caning, antique clocks, furniture making and 19th century decorative painting techniques. The Local History Tent will feature exhibits and displays that will be brought to life by the members of 20 historical societies and groups including the Dunellen Historical Society. Celebrate National Herb Day With Gardening Workshops

The Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County invites you to celebrate National Herb Day with the Rutgers Master Gardeners at their “Ask a Master Gardener” event and plant sale. The event will take place on Saturday, May 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the 4-H Youth Center located at 645 Cranbury Road in East Brunswick. Attendees should use the Fern Road entrance. County to hold Birthday Party for Nonagenarians

The Middlesex County Office of Aging and Disabled Services will once again hold Birthday Bashes for senior citizens age 90 and over as part of its National Older Americans Month celebration. Each celebrant is invited with one guest. A few spots remain for this year, but registration is required. “We are happy we can give these special seniors a chance to enjoy the “limelight” with the recognition luncheon and entertainment,” said Gerry Mackenzie, Community Services Department Head. The Piscataway luncheon (scheduled for May 20) will honor residents of Carteret, Dunellen, Highland Park, Middlesex, New Brunswick, Piscataway and South Plainfield. Continue Reading →

Recycling Regulations Change

Today marked the last day Dunellen residents needed to separate their recycling. As of March 30, 2015, the Middlesex County Improvement Authority (MCIA) is transitioning to SINGLE-STREAM RECYCLING COLLECTION. For participating municipalities including Dunellen, this eliminates the need for sorting recyclables prior to curbside pick-up. Acceptable items include newspaper and mixed paper, cardboard, cans, bottles and plastics. At approximately 65%, Middlesex County has exceeded the state’s 60% recycling rate for the sixteenth year and was the state’s #1 recycling county for five of those years, according to the latest report from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Middlesex County Hosts Spring Cultural Events

Throughout the month of March, Middlesex County is showcasing how various cultures celebrate spring. The Folklife Program for New Jersey is partnering with the County to host the events at the historic Indian Queen Tavern at East Jersey Olde Towne Village in Johnson Park. “Spring Celebration: A Celtic Music Journey with Heather Mulvey” will be presented at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 22. Lecture regarding British soldiers in Middlesex County, March 1

The Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission will present a free lecture “Wintering in the Raritan River Valley,” which will bring an overlooked perspective to light, the story of the British troops of the American Revolution, and their time encamped in the Raritan River Valley. It is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, March 1. To add to the historical immersion of the event, the lecture will be held inside the Indian Queen Tavern at East Jersey Olde Towne Village, located inside Johnson Park at 1050 River Road in Piscataway. The hardships and challenges of the British will be explored in a multimedia presentation. Lecturer Wade P. Open House to view new Middlesex County FEMA Flood Maps

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region II office released updates to the flood hazard maps, known as Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), for Middlesex County. These updates were preliminarily issued to Middlesex County and incorporated areas on January 1st, 2014. The FIRMs identify areas that have flood risk in Middlesex County. Insurance companies use FIRMs to determine flood insurance rates for buildings and their contents, and lenders utilize this information to determine flood insurance requirements. Middlesex County residents and property owners are encouraged to learn more about their flood risk and the updates shown on the preliminary flood hazard maps by looking up their property’s address in the “What’s my BFE” tool at www.region2coastal.com. Recycling Schedule Announced for 2015

According to a press release posted on the Middlesex County Improvement Agency (MCIA) website, there is one big change with its recycling program. Although Dunellen residents will continue to expect recycling pickups every other Wednesday, there will be no printed schedule sent to households in 2015. In the press release, Ed Windas, MCIA division recycling manager cites the reason. “It really does fly in the face of our mission here.
