Middlesex County presents Greek Cultural Program on January 29

An authentic celebration of Greek culture featuring the Hellenic Dancers of New Jersey will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, January 29 at the Crossroads Theatre, located at 7 Livingston Ave. in New Brunswick. The program is sponsored by the Middlesex County Office of Culture and Heritage. It takes audiences on an exciting journey through the diverse regions of Greece. Use of the Crossroads Theatre facility was made possible through the generosity of Johnson & Johnson and the New Brunswick Cultural Center Inc.

The Hellenic Dancers of New Jersey, founded in 1972, are a group of young adults who are
first-, second- or third-generation Greek Americans dedicated to keeping their heritage alive through performances of Greek regional folk dances. Continue Reading →

Registrations Being Accepted for County Sheriff’s Civilian Academy

The Sheriff’s Office will hold an 8-week-long Sheriff’s Civilian Academy for residents of Middlesex County beginning April 2016. The program is designed to educate Middlesex County residents on the various functions and duties of the Sheriff’s Office. Applications are being accepted now for the program, which will be held at the Middlesex County Police Training Center at North Patrol Road in Edison. The first session will take place on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 from 7 to 9 p.m. Classes will continue weekly on Wednesdays. One Saturday class will be held. Continue Reading →

Free holiday program at East Jersey Old Town Village

This season’s holidays offer plenty of music, good cheer and opportunities for togetherness. The Middlesex County Office of Culture and Heritage invites you to experience it all as it hosts its “Seasonal Traditions” holiday program at East Jersey Old Town Village in Piscataway. These special events, all free of charge, will be held at the Village from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13. Scheduled activities include:

Children’s Craft Session: 2-3 p.m.

Middlesex County’s Outdoor Ice Skating Rink Opens For Season

Middlesex County’s Roosevelt Park Family Ice Skating Rink opened for its thirteenth season on Friday, November 20. The rink is located at the Level Playing Fields Complex inside the County’s Roosevelt Park, which is adjacent to Menlo Park Mall in Edison. Per session admission is $6 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and children 17 and under. Discounts are available for multi-session passes and groups. Elections on Nov. 3

On November 3, Dunellen residents head to the voting booth. Turnout is expected to be light since there are no offices above New Jersey General Assembly that are up for election. Assemblyman Gerald “Jerry” Green (D) who has represented the 22nd Legislative District since 1992 is running with the former mayor of Rahway James J. Kennedy (D). Kennedy is hoping to fill the chair that Linda Stender left open. Stender who had held the position since 2002 chose not to seek reelection after questions arose about her permanent residence status and involvement in her husband’s application for Habitat for Humanity assistance after Hurricane Sandy. Middlesex County offers historical podcasts

Middlesex County’s new website now feature a series of free mini podcasts or audio files that focus on state history that is bizarre or not commonly known. Known as “UnCommon History,” these podcasts are made possible by the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the Office of Cultural and Heritage and the New Jersey Historical Commission, a Division of the Department of State. Most are approximately five minutes in length. There are currently over fifty podcasts in this growing series including one on a town that used to border Dunellen and appropriately for the season, one on the Pine Barrens’ Jersey Devil. Middlesex County Workshop on Healthy Eating, Oct. 17

“Quick and Easy Ways to Include Fruits and Vegetables in your Diet” is the topic of an upcoming workshop offered by the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County. The class will take place from 12:15 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 at the EARTH Center in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park, located in South Brunswick at 42 Riva Avenue. This workshop will demonstrate ways to get the most out of your meals by adding in extra servings of fruit and vegetables. Middlesex County offering passport processing hours this Saturday

The Middlesex County Clerk’s Office will be open during special weekend hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26 to process U.S. Passport applications. The Middlesex County Clerk’s Office is joining the U.S. Department of State in celebrating Passport Awareness Month. “We are pleased to offer this service for those residents who would like to apply for a U.S. passport for their fall and winter travel, but find it difficult to take time off from work or to take children out of school during the week,” said Middlesex County Clerk Elaine M. Flynn. In addition to processing passports on this special event, the County Clerk’s Office will also be administering Notary oaths to those who have applied to the State of New Jersey to become a Notary Public and have already received their commission back from the State. County to Offer Composting Workshops

Two free composting seminars are being held at the Middlesex County EARTH Center in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park, 42 Riva Ave., South Brunswick. Classes run about 2 hours and feature an overview and explanation of two composting techniques:

Backyard Composting: 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 \
Vermi-Composting (using worms): 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21

Middlesex County to host “Clara Barton” on July 4

On Saturday, July 4, 2015, Pat Jordan of the American Historical Theatre will portray “Clara Barton” in a special presentation with performances at 1 and 3p.m. This free event, hosted by the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Office of Cultural and Heritage, will take place inside East Jersey Old Town’s Indian Queen Tavern, located at 1050 River Road in Piscataway. Clara Barton was a celebrated Civil War nurse. She began her career as a teacher and started a school in Hightstown, New Jersey. Barton answered Abraham Lincoln’s request for nurses to join the Union forces. She earned the name “Angel of the Battlefield” for her heroic efforts, including going to the front lines.
