The Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office is now accepting applications for an eight-week-long Sheriff’s Civilian Academy for residents of Middlesex County in the Fall of 2016. The Sheriff’s Civilian Academy which is designed to educate Middlesex County residents on the various functions and duties of the Sheriff’s Office will be held at the Middlesex County Police Training Center on North Patrol Road in Edison. EARTH Butterfly House Opens for Summer Season

The Butterfly House in the Middlesex County EARTH Center has opened for the summer season. The “hoop house” which is maintained by the Master Gardener Program is filled with plants that feed and shelter butterflies and larvae native to New Jersey. Information is available on butterfly host plants and attracting butterflies to local yards and gardens. EARTH Center Lawn Mower Maintenance Workshop June 18

The Master Gardeners of Middlesex County will hold a free workshop on the “A-Z of Lawn Mower Maintenance” from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 18 at the EARTH Center in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park in South Brunswick. This “hands-on” workshop will teach the “dos and don’ts” of lawn mower maintenance and will include such topics as: mower safety, cleaning air filters, changing engine oil and other tips on how to keep your lawn mower properly maintained. Also covered will be basic techniques on how to encourage a healthy lawn while limiting the use of pesticides. The program is FREE, but registration is required by June 15. Middlesex County History Day To Be Held June 5

The Middlesex County History Day will be returning to East Jersey Old Town Village from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 5. Old Town Village is located inside Johnson Park at 1050 River Road in Piscataway. The site-wide celebration will be filled with demonstrations, performances, and other family-friendly activities. Demonstrations will include blacksmithing, open-hearth cooking, yarn spinning, weaving, chair caning, antique clocks, lacemaking and 19th-century decorative painting techniques. Members of the Dunellen Historical Society, including author John Triolo will have a booth in the History Tent which will also feature exhibits and displays by other historical societies and groups. ‘The Little Mermaid’ to Open Middlesex County’s Plays-In-The-Park Season

Middlesex County’s Plays-in-the-Park will open its Summer 2016 season with the adaptation of Disney’s animated movie The Little Mermaid. The show runs from June 15 to 25, excluding Sunday, June 19. The show begins at 8:30p.m., except for the performances on June 20 and 21, which start at 7:30 p.m.
Plays-in-the-Park is located at the Stephen J. Capestro Theater within Roosevelt Park at 1 Pine Drive in Edison, NJ. The Little Mermaid will be directed and produced by Gary P. Cohen and choreographed by Michelle Massa. The musical director will be John Brzozowski. Continue Reading →

Youth Conservation Corps Summer Jobs Available

Applications are now being accepted for the Middlesex County Youth Conservation Corps, whose mission is to protect and preserve the more than 7,600 acres of Open Space owned and maintained by Middlesex County. Conservation Corps crew members earn $9.00 per hour and will work Monday through Friday from June 27 through August 19. Work will primarily take place at County Open Spaces in Old Bridge, Monroe and South Brunswick. High school and college students age 16 and over are encouraged to apply. Middlesex County Celebrates Irish Culture March 15

The Middlesex County Office of Culture and Heritage will host “An Evening of Irish Music, Song & Dance” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 15 at the South Amboy High School Auditorium, located at 200 Governor Hoffman Plaza on John T. O’Leary Boulevard in South Amboy. The evening’s program featuring the talents of the Daoine Irish Music Band will include dance music (jigs, reels and hornpipes) as well as hauntingly beautiful airs and songs and will be accompanied by sean nós (Irish “old-style”) dancing. The group’s instruments include fiddle, uilleann (Irish) pipes, bodhran, button accordion, whistle, flute, bouzouki and banjo. Admission is free, but registration is required. Middlesex County To Hold Disability Resources Fair

The Middlesex County Office of Aging and Disabled Services will hold its first resources fair for people with disabilities and their caregivers, “Disability Connections: An Information and Resource Fair” from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 12. The event will take place at the Middlesex County Fire Academy in Sayreville, 1001 Fire Academy Drive. The fair will offer information about resources and support services available to persons with disabilities in Middlesex County. County Sponsors Open House on Rt. 529 Transit, Pedestrian and Bicycle Access

The Middlesex County Office of Planning and the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority will host the second public open house on the Route 529 Corridor, to determine possible improvements to the area. The Open House is scheduled to be held 6 to 8:30 p.m. March 7 at the Stelton Community Center, located at 328 Plainfield Ave. in Edison. Topics of discussion will include the possible expansion of transit services along the corridor, and the enhancement of bicycle and pedestrian facilities there. Middlesex County Offers Workshop on How to Paint Ukrainian Easter Eggs

The Middlesex County Office of Culture & Heritage and the Folklife Program for New Jersey are proud to present a spring program where participants will learn how to design and create their own traditional Ukrainian Easter egg. This program is scheduled to be held from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 12 at East Jersey Old Town Village’s Indian Queen Tavern, located in Piscataway’s Johnson Park at 1050 River Road. Pysanky, the act of painting eggs in traditional Ukrainian style, is always done during the time of Lent, before Easter, to celebrate the coming of spring and new beginnings. The program’s visiting folk artist, Natalie Warchola, has been practicing pysanky for over 30 years.
