Author and Holocaust Survivor visits Lincoln Middle School

Johanna Reiss, author of The Upstairs Room spoke to Dunellen’s seventh and eighth grade students about her craft and surviving the Holocaust. Reiss shared her story with the students to remind them that we need to accept everyone and embrace our diversity. She was born in the Netherlands and now lives in New York. Her book The Upstairs Room and the book The Journey Back are about her living in hiding as a Jewish child during World War II and her first year after the Holocaust. According to Lincoln Middle School principal Robert Altmire, “these experiences allow students to understand the struggles people have gone through and empathize with them.”

The presentation was arranged with funds from the Dunellen PTO and organized by PTO member, Ellen Byrnes and Ashley Merkler, teacher at Lincoln Middle School. Continue Reading →

Dunellen Junior High Places 3rd in State Chess Championship

Lincoln Middle School’s chess team recently placed third in the New Jersey Junior High School Chess Championship at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft. The February 21 event, sponsored by the New Jersey State Chess Federation, was open to all public and private schools in New Jersey. First place went to the Sparta Chess Club. Initially, two teams tied for second: Dunellen and Westfield’s Holy Trinity School. After judges went through rankings and past wins, Holy Trinity was awarded second place, and Dunellen was awarded third place. Continue Reading →
