The Middlesex County 4-H Flea Market is scheduled for Saturday, May 20 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the 4-H Youth Center, 645 Cranbury Rd., East Brunswick. The rain date will be May 21. A variety of vendors will sell new and used items, from crafts to collectibles. Refreshments and children’s entertainment also will be available. The Middlesex County Office of Culture and Heritage (MCOCH) is sponsoring “New Jersey and the Great War,” a lecture on New Jersey’s role in World War I.
A part of the MCOCH’s event series honoring the WWI Centennial, this free program is scheduled for Sunday, April 9, at the Indian Queen Tavern in East Jersey Old Town Village, 1050 River Road in Piscataway. Two sessions will be held: 1 and 3 p.m.
The First World War, also known as the Great War, lasted from July 28, 1914, to November 11, 1918, with the United States officially entering the war on April 6, 1917. Joe Bilby, Assistant Curator of the New Jersey National Guard and Militia Museum in Sea Girt, will give an overview of the events leading up to the war, the war in Europe and the impact of the conflict on New Jersey and local communities. The Middlesex County Office of Culture and Heritage will be presenting the second installment in its series of events marking the centennial of World War I. This special presentation will focus on how New Jersey was impacted by an important event that coincided with the First World War, the 1918 Influenza Pandemic. This free program is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, April 30 at East Jersey Old Town Village, 1050 River Road in Piscataway. This outbreak was one of the most severe of the 20th Century. On 3/25/2017 at 6:55 pm – Police responded to South Avenue for the report of an abandoned vehicle. Upon arrival, officers located an unoccupied Nissan Sentra with fresh damage. A check of the vehicle’s registration revealed that it had been stolen out of Middlesex Borough earlier that morning. The car was turned over to Middlesex Police Department for processing before being returned to its rightful owner. An announcement went out to Dunellen residents this morning regarding a new additive to their water supply. The additive, a bitter, white crystalline purine, would not change the taste or appearance of the water. However, according to the U.S. Water Corporation (USWC) spokesperson Hu Sreedinthiz, “those drinking the tap water would feel more alert and energetic.” This is because the additive, a methylxanthine, increases basal metabolic rate in adults and stimulates certain portions of the autonomic nervous system. “Free coffee today.” Employees of QuickChek’s Dunellen location took turns last Wednesday greeting customers with the good news. The treat was in honor of QuickChek’s golden anniversary. The Dunellen Police Department will be cracking down on distracted drivers during April as part of New Jersey’s “U Drive. U Text. U Pay.” enforcement campaign. Beginning April 1 and running through April 21, the high visibility law enforcement initiative will target motorists who engage in dangerous distracted driving behaviors such as talking on hand-held cell phones and sending text messages while driving. New Jersey American Water (NJAW) will begin routine flushing of the water distribution system in Dunellen from March 20 to April 3 during the hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The flushing which is part of the system maintenance program also allows NJAW to monitor and maintain fire hydrants. When crews are working in your area, there may be noticeably reduced pressure or discolored water. If water is discolored, let it run until it runs clear before using. On Sunday, March 12, Dunellen parents with children enrolled in the Dunellen School District received the following notice from Superintendant Gene Mosley via text, email, and/or phone call. “Over the weekend there were rumors circulating that a student who was scheduled to return to school on Monday, March 13, was planning to cause harm in the high school. School administrators, along with the superintendent, and members of the Dunellen Police Department investigated throughout the weekend and found those rumors to be unsubstantiated and not credible. When your children arrive for school tomorrow they will be greeted by school administrators, the superintendent, and members of the Dunellen Police Department who are all working together to make sure that every day in the Dunellen School District is a good day. “Read Across America” was celebrated at John P. Faber Elementary School the entire week of February 28-March 3, 2017. The event is held at schools across the country to remind students about the importance of reading. It was originally created by the National Education Association twenty years ago to coincide with children’s author Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel’s birthday on March 2. The week-long Faber program was coordinated by Beth Willoughby, the school’s media specialist. Students had many guest readers throughout the week including Dunellen High School administrators, retired teachers, Somerset Patriots’ mascot Sparkee and media relations/broadcasting manager Marc Schwartz, representatives from the NJ Devils, Dunellen Fire Department members, and other community figures.
