Middlesex County Freeholders H. James Polos and Kenneth Armwood have announced that the County will offer volunteer firefighters and Emergency Management Services personnel a free tuition program through Middlesex County College.
The Middlesex County Volunteer Tuition Waiver Program will be offered to one eligible volunteer firefighter and one eligible EMS volunteer from each municipality. To qualify, they must be identified and authorized by their individual organizations and must be active members in good standing.
Participants may take up to 6 credits per semester at Middlesex County College – and a lifetime maximum of 24 credits. The program covers tuition only. Students are responsible for all fees and books. It will begin with the Fall 2015 semester.
“We have proclaimed 2015 as the Year of the Volunteer,” said Freeholder H. James Polos, chair of the County’s Public Safety and Health Committee. “We see this new tuition program as an extra benefit to the men and women who put themselves at risk to keep their neighbors and communities safe.”
Freeholder Polos said this is one of a series of initiatives for volunteers that will be rolled out during the year.
Participants may choose courses offered by Middlesex County College, provided they satisfy any prerequisites and subject to space availability. They may register for classes during the “late registration” period, typically the week before classes begin. Should seats not be available in the volunteer’s first choice of course(s), he or she may choose an alternate course(s). Students must maintain a minimum of a “C” average, which is equivalent to a 2.0 GPA or better, to remain in the program.
