Dunellen’s Halloween Traditions Adjust for COVID

Halloween has not been cancelled in Dunellen. Its traditions are merely being adapted to the current global health crisis. Below is information on the various activities going on.

DUNELLEN:

HALLOWEEN PET COSTUME CONTEST: The Dunellen Public Library is sponsoring an online pet costume contest. Tag the Dunellen Public Library on a photo of your pet in a costume you post on Facebook or Instagram for a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to Kathy’s Top Dog Salon. Winner will be chosen by number of “likes” by November 1, 2020.

DRIVE-IN HALLOWEEN EVENT – October 31, 10AM: Ms. Jennifer’s Halloween Drive-In Mother Goose event will be taking place in the Dunellen Public Library’s parking lot. Registration is required.

HALLOWEEN PARADE – October 31, 12noon: The Dunellen Recreation Commission’s 72nd annual Halloween Parade will be held in Columbia Park this year. TRUNK OR TREAT – October 31, 2-5PM : This year, the Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) is organizing a trunk or treat in several locations in town. Although the event is free for Dunellen residents, registration is required.

TRICK OR TREATING – October 31, 1- 8PM. Participants should maintain safety protocols. Houses not participating this year should turn off exterior lights. The Dunellen Arts & Culture Commission held a Fall House Decorating Contest earlier this month. 349 Third Street won for the Halloween category and 747 Second Street won for the Fall category.

MIDDLESEX COUNTY:

HALLOWEEN CELEBRATION AND FOOD DRIVE – October 28 -November 1, 10 to 4PM: Middlesex County’s East Jersey Old Town Village, located in Piscataway is hosting a sci-fi themed Halloween Celebration and Food Drive. Visitors will get a bag packed with candy and other fun activities in exchange for canned and dry goods or monetary donation to MCFOODS. A life sized UFO will be on display for the perfect picture backdrop. Costumes are encouraged! https://www.facebook.com/events/3326330864153366

WAR OF THE WORLDS RADIO PLAY – Oct. 28- Nov. 1: On the county’s website, there are additional activities and celebration suggestions including an adaptation of the classic radio drama “War of the Worlds” by Raconteur Radio, featuring special sound effects and homages to East Jersey Old Town Village (streaming from Oct. 28- Nov. 1 at www.middlesexcountynj.gov/Halloween2020).
