Middlesex County offering passport processing hours this Saturday

The Middlesex County Clerk’s Office will be open during special weekend hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26 to process U.S. Passport applications. The Middlesex County Clerk’s Office is joining the U.S. Department of State in celebrating Passport Awareness Month.

“We are pleased to offer this service for those residents who would like to apply for a U.S. passport for their fall and winter travel, but find it difficult to take time off from work or to take children out of school during the week,” said Middlesex County Clerk Elaine M. Flynn.

In addition to processing passports on this special event, the County Clerk’s Office will also be administering Notary oaths to those who have applied to the State of New Jersey to become a Notary Public and have already received their commission back from the State. There is a $15 processing fee in the form of a check, money order, or the exact amount in cash.

U.S. citizens must present a valid passport book when entering or re-entering the United States by air. U.S. citizens entering the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda at land borders and sea ports of entry must present a passport book, passport card, or other travel documents approved by the U.S. Government.

Applications for U.S. Passports will be accepted in the Freeholder Meeting Room (First Floor), Middlesex County Administration Building, 75 Bayard Street in New Brunswick.

Persons applying for a Passport must present:

  • Evidence of U.S. citizenship in the form of a certified birth certificate with a raised seal and a file date from the registrar of vital statistics from the state, county or municipality the applicant was born in, or a previous passport for natural born citizens. (Hospital birth certificates and baptismal certificates are not acceptable.) If applying for a passport for a minor under the age of 16, both parents and the minor child must be present at time of application. All applicants’ birth certificates must have parents’ names.
  • Evidence of U.S. citizenship in the form of a naturalization certificate is required for foreign-born citizens who became U.S. citizens through naturalization
  • Identification in the form of a valid driver’s license, a school photo ID, or an employment photo ID.
  • One 2″x 2″ regulation passport photo taken within the last six months. The Clerk’s Office will offer photo service that day for $10.

The fee for an adult passport age 16 and over is $135. Payment must be made via check or money order in the amount of $110 payable to the U.S. Department of State and a separate check or money order for $25 made payable to the Middlesex County Clerk. The passport is valid for 10 years.

The fee for a child’s passport (under age 16) is $105. Make check or money order in the amount of $80 payable to U.S. Department of State and a check or money order for $25 payable to the Middlesex County Clerk. The minor passport is valid for five years.

No cash will be accepted. Payment is accepted in the form of check or money order only. All applicants must appear in person.

Processing time is approximately four to six weeks. Expedited applications take approximately three weeks to be processed, and there is an additional $60 fee.

Regular office hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
