The first sign that spring is near – Maple sugaring

The end of winter brings the end of snow but it brings something even sweeter… maple syrup. Here are some maple sugaring events not far from Dunellen.

  • Somerset County Environmental Education Center
    190 Lord Stirling Rd, Basking Ridge, NJ • 908 766-2489
    The free events are held every Saturday and Sunday through March 15. The 90-minute program includes a half-mile hike to the “Sugar Shack” where the process will be demonstrated.

  • Duke Farms
    1112 Dukes Parkway West, Hillsborough • 908 722-3700
    Visitors will learn how to tap a tree, view a live saw mill demonstration and participate in nature hikes related to the Sugar Maple. There is no charge for the activities. The cafe will have a special menu based on maple syrup.

    The family-friendly Maple Sugar Fest includes tapping and cooking demonstrations, taste tests, and a scavenger hunt. $5/person or $20/family
