Walgreens in Middlesex to close Feb. 27

Walgreens will be closing its Middlesex, NJ location on Friday, February 27. The pharmacy was one of the few Drug Fair locations that were purchased by Walgreens, prior to Drug Fair declaring Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2009. Prescription orders will be transferred to the chain’s Green Brook site on Warrenville Road and Route 22. Other nearby locations include Piscataway and Bound Brook. Items that will not be making the move to Green Brook, including summer clothing, school supplies, and children’s toys have been sharply discounted. Continue Reading →

Lecture regarding British soldiers in Middlesex County, March 1

The Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission will present a free lecture “Wintering in the Raritan River Valley,” which will bring an overlooked perspective to light, the story of the British troops of the American Revolution, and their time encamped in the Raritan River Valley. It is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, March 1. To add to the historical immersion of the event, the lecture will be held inside the Indian Queen Tavern at East Jersey Olde Towne Village, located inside Johnson Park at 1050 River Road in Piscataway. The hardships and challenges of the British will be explored in a multimedia presentation. Lecturer Wade P. Middlesex County seeking Teams for Annual Youth Basketball Tournament

The Middlesex County Office of Parks & Recreation is seeking teams for its annual Board of Chosen Freeholders’ Basketball Tournament, which starts in early March. Games are played Monday through Thursday at 6:30, 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. and will be held at the Middlesex County Vocational-Technical School located at 21 Sutton Lane in Piscataway. The tournament consists of four divisions:
Youth Division #1: (Boys and Girls ages 10 and under)
Youth Division #2: (Boys and Girls ages 12 and under)
Youth Division #3: (Boys and Girls ages 13 and 14)
Youth Division #4: (Boys and Girls ages 15 to 17)

Your Tap Water May Taste Different this Winter

As part of its annual pipeline maintenance program, New Jersey American Water (NJAW) will temporarily change the water treatment process at its Raritan-Millstone Water Treatment Plant in Bridgewater and at its Canal Road Water Treatment Plant in Somerset from chloramines (a combination of ammonia and chlorine) to free chlorine. The change will begin on February 1, 2015 and last through March. During this period, customers may notice an increase in the taste and smell of chlorine in their water. NJAW will continuously monitor water quality to ensure that it meets or surpasses federal and state drinking water standards. Open House to view new Middlesex County FEMA Flood Maps

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region II office released updates to the flood hazard maps, known as Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), for Middlesex County. These updates were preliminarily issued to Middlesex County and incorporated areas on January 1st, 2014. The FIRMs identify areas that have flood risk in Middlesex County. Insurance companies use FIRMs to determine flood insurance rates for buildings and their contents, and lenders utilize this information to determine flood insurance requirements. Middlesex County residents and property owners are encouraged to learn more about their flood risk and the updates shown on the preliminary flood hazard maps by looking up their property’s address in the “What’s my BFE” tool at www.region2coastal.com. Potential Blizzard Starting Monday Evening

The National Weather Service-Mt. Holly has announced that “one of the largest snow storms of the winter” will impact Central Jersey Monday into Tuesday. Blizzard watches were already in effect for shore areas early Sunday morning because of high winds. Snow accumulations in the amount of 6′ to 16′ are currently expected as a result of the storm. State Transportation Trust Fund to be discussed at RVRC meeting

Assemblyman John S. Wisniewski, chairman of the New Jersey Assembly Transportation and Independent Authorities Committee, will be the featured speaker at the Raritan Valley Rail Coalition (RVRC)’s meeting on January 26. He will give an update on the state Legislature’s latest efforts to increase funding for the Transportation Trust Fund. The fund is projected to run out of money by July 15. The Rail Coalition trustees also will provide an update on the initiative’s website (www.raritanvalleyrail.com) and social-media campaign. They will present highlights from the January 12th debut of weekday evening one-seat ride service to Penn Station New York and from their recent meeting with NJ Transit on the one-seat ride initiative. New Year, New Mass Transit Schedules

NJ Transit trains and buses will start running on new schedules in the next few weeks. A new rail schedule will take effect on Sunday, January 11 on the Raritan Valley Line (RVL). This schedule reflects the new one-seat ride in and out of New York Penn Station during off-peak evening hours during the week. The RVL already goes directly into Manhattan during off-peak morning and early afternoon hours. The adjusted bus schedules will go into effect January 17, 2015. Continue Reading →
