An email alert issued by New Jersey American Water informed its Dunellen customers that the company will begin routine flushing its water distribution system April 11. The procedure will continue until July 10 and will be done during the daytime, from 8AM to 5PM. The flushing is done to ensure high-quality water service and to monitor and maintain fire hydrants. Four hospitalized after car crash

Four people were hospitalized after a two-vehicle accident at 11:20 am on April 6 at the intersection of South Washington Avenue and Walnut Street. According to Sergeant Jeffrey Del Buono of the Dunellen Police Department’s Traffic Safety Division, one of the vehicles was traveling north on South Washington Avenue and failed to stop for a red light. The second vehicle was traveling east on Walnut Street and collided with the other vehicle in the intersection. One of the vehicles then struck a telephone pole. The 45-year-old driver of one of the vehicles and her 66-year-old passenger were transported by ambulance to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital-Somerset. Continue Reading →

Dunellen Preschool Program Applications Due By May

The Dunellen Board of Education (BOE) is currently accepting applications through May 15, 2016 for its tuition-based integrated preschool program at John P. Faber School. The 2016-2017 school year will be the first time the BOE will allow applications from surrounding school districts. Admission is selected by a lottery system with residents of Dunellen getting preferred access to the program. The two preschool classes will consist of 15 to 18 students, several of whom require special education service, with the remainder being typically developing 4 year olds. The program based on the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards will be supervised by Director of Special Services Michael Botti along with Faber School Principal Gary “JR” Lubisco. Historian to Lecture on “Path to Freedom: Free African-Americans in New Jersey”

The Middlesex County Office of Culture and Heritage will host Historian Walter Greason for a lecture about the history of African-Americans in New Jersey during the 19th and 20th centuries. “Path to Freedom: Free African-Americans in New Jersey” is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9 in Crabiel Hall at Middlesex County College located at 2600 Woodbridge Avenue in Edison. The lecture will discuss the development of African-American communities in rural New Jersey during the late 19th and 20th centuries and the role of those communities in New Jersey’s history as well as the effects of suburbanization. Dr. Walter Greason is an expert on post-American Revolution racism and economic history. He has published four academic works, and holds a joint position in the Departments of History and Anthropology and Management and Decision Sciences at Monmouth University in West Long Branch. Applications are now being accepted for the Middlesex County Youth Conservation Corps, whose mission is to protect and preserve the more than 7,600 acres of Open Space owned and maintained by Middlesex County. Conservation Corps crew members earn $9.00 per hour and will work Monday through Friday from June 27 through August 19. Work will primarily take place at County Open Spaces in Old Bridge, Monroe and South Brunswick. High school and college students age 16 and over are encouraged to apply. Today, the internet retailer Amazon expanded its free same-day delivery service which is a perk for its Prime members. Residents in Dunellen and its neighboring towns are included in the 27 metro areas eligible for the service. Amazon already provides free two-day shipping of over 30 million products as part of its Prime membership which costs $99 per year. The same-day delivery option which debuted last year with a more limited delivery range is only available for over one million products in forty categories. On 3/30/16 @ 1:50am – A Plainfield resident was arrested and charged with contempt of court following a motor vehicle stop on Walnut Street. The vehicle was stopped for not having a front license plate and the driver was found to have an active warrant for her arrest. She was arrested, processed and later posted bail and was released. On 3/26/16 @ 11:49pm – A Plainfield resident was arrested and charged with DWI following a motor vehicle stop on South Avenue. Middlesex County Selling Composting Bins, Holding Composting Seminars

This Spring, the Middlesex County Division of Solid Waste Management will have composting bins for sale every Wednesday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 711 Jersey Avenue in New Brunswick. Different types of bins are available, including those exclusively for yard trimmings, bins that use scraps from your table and yard, and an indoor bin for vermi-composting with worms.
Three free composting seminars will be held at the Middlesex County EARTH Center in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park, 42 Riva Ave., South Brunswick. Classes run about 2 hours. Backyard Composting: 10 a.m. Sunday, April 10

New Use for Columbia Park Football Field This Summer

This summer, the Dunellen High School’s football field at Columbia Park will have an additional use, as a lawn bowling court. Head of the Dunellen Recreation Commission, Miles Alexander, stated in a press release issued on March 32, “Because space is limited in Dunellen, everything must do triple-duty. The field was recently used for our Easter Hunt with great success. We knew there had to be another way to use this hundred yards of grass.” According to Alexander, it was Loof Lirpa, a Recreation board member and Second Vice President of the Dunellen Historical Society, who originally made the suggestion of lawn bowling as the field’s summer use.
