Celebrate National Herb Day With Gardening Workshops

The Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County invites you to celebrate National Herb Day with the Rutgers Master Gardeners at their “Ask a Master Gardener” event and plant sale. The event will take place on Saturday, May 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the 4-H Youth Center located at 645 Cranbury Road in East Brunswick. Attendees should use the Fern Road entrance. County to hold Birthday Party for Nonagenarians

The Middlesex County Office of Aging and Disabled Services will once again hold Birthday Bashes for senior citizens age 90 and over as part of its National Older Americans Month celebration. Each celebrant is invited with one guest. A few spots remain for this year, but registration is required. “We are happy we can give these special seniors a chance to enjoy the “limelight” with the recognition luncheon and entertainment,” said Gerry Mackenzie, Community Services Department Head. The Piscataway luncheon (scheduled for May 20) will honor residents of Carteret, Dunellen, Highland Park, Middlesex, New Brunswick, Piscataway and South Plainfield. Continue Reading →

Former Destroyers raise money for Special Olympics

Last month, sixteen former Destroyers donned their football jerseys to compete in the NY Giants Snow Bowl, a flag football tournament held at MetLife Stadium. The tournament benefited the Special Olympics New Jersey. The idea to participate came from Chris Maynard who had seen a Facebook post regarding the event. “I thought it was a great cause and a great way to get the guys together.” The team was required to raise at least $2000 to participate. Little League season has started

On Saturday, April 11, Dunellen’s youngest athletes, enrolled in the Dunellen Recreation Department’s T-Ball, Coach Pitch, and Softball programs, and the Dunellen Little League walked from Washington Park to McCoy Park in the annual Opening Day Parade. Acting Recreation Director Alex Miller, Dunellen Little League President Barbara McGuane, and Mayor Bob Seader addressed the players and their families at a brief ceremony at the end of the parade. April Perrine, who had starred in the Dunellen High School musical “Annie” sang the National Anthem and all of the season’s coaches and players were introduced. This season, only ten 11 and 12 year old children signed up for the Major League. Those players were incorporated into the Green Brook Little League teams. McGuane mentioned the Dunellen Little League is hoping to rebuild the program, keeping the Minor League age divisions active. Continue Reading →

NJAW returns to normal water treatment

On April 15, New Jersey American Water (NJAW) will resume the use of chloramines (a mixture of chlorine and ammonia) to treat water at its Canal Road and Raritan Millstone Water Treatment Plants. Municipalities that receive service from these plants include Dunellen, Green Brook, Middlesex, Piscataway, and Plainfield. According to a NJAW spokesperson, chloramines have been used in the system for more than 25 years and are an effective method of water disinfection meeting all national and state drinking water standards. In mid-January, as part of its system maintenance program, NJAW temporarily changed its treatment process from chloramines to chlorine. The three-month changeover to chlorine allowed the company to perform maintenance on its chemical feed systems and remove any residual ammonia from the water distribution system. Continue Reading →

Starting next week, Rome Pizza will no longer be selling plain cheese pizza. Citing new food trends and lack of demand for simple ingredients, owner John Confalone said that he would now only be selling pizzas with at least two toppings. “Yes, we were named the best pizzeria in Central Jersey but no one wants to eat what their parents and grandparents grew up eating.” Confalone said.”More is more. Benefit for local blues musician with a big heart

The words “Big Nancy” and “benefit” are not an unusual pairing. Blues harpist Nancy Wertheim-Swarbrick is known for her giving nature, helping support local musicians when they are in dire straits. What is unusual is that this time she is the person receiving the funds. Wertheim-Swarbrick who is known by her blues name “Big Nancy” has lived in the Central Jersey area for most of her life, at least when she wasn’t on tour. An Ambassador of the Blues Hall of Fame, she played the harmonica in The Sonny Rhodes Band and shared the stage with many musical giants including Willie Dixon and Bruce Springsteen. Recycling Regulations Change

Today marked the last day Dunellen residents needed to separate their recycling. As of March 30, 2015, the Middlesex County Improvement Authority (MCIA) is transitioning to SINGLE-STREAM RECYCLING COLLECTION. For participating municipalities including Dunellen, this eliminates the need for sorting recyclables prior to curbside pick-up. Acceptable items include newspaper and mixed paper, cardboard, cans, bottles and plastics. At approximately 65%, Middlesex County has exceeded the state’s 60% recycling rate for the sixteenth year and was the state’s #1 recycling county for five of those years, according to the latest report from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Free Tuition Program at MCC for Volunteer Firefighters & EMS Personnel

Middlesex County Freeholders H. James Polos and Kenneth Armwood have announced that the County will offer volunteer firefighters and Emergency Management Services personnel a free tuition program through Middlesex County College. The Middlesex County Volunteer Tuition Waiver Program will be offered to one eligible volunteer firefighter and one eligible EMS volunteer from each municipality. To qualify, they must be identified and authorized by their individual organizations and must be active members in good standing. Participants may take up to 6 credits per semester at Middlesex County College – and a lifetime maximum of 24 credits. The program covers tuition only. Continue Reading →

Middlesex County Hosts Spring Cultural Events

Throughout the month of March, Middlesex County is showcasing how various cultures celebrate spring. The Folklife Program for New Jersey is partnering with the County to host the events at the historic Indian Queen Tavern at East Jersey Olde Towne Village in Johnson Park. “Spring Celebration: A Celtic Music Journey with Heather Mulvey” will be presented at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 22.
