Walk Your Child to School Day, October 7

John P. Faber Elementary School students, parents, staff and volunteers will be walking in the 16th Annual International Walk Your Child to School Day on October 7 starting at 7:30 a.m.

Participants will meet up at two main starting points, St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church and Columbia Park, and travel together using safety tips they have learned. There will be giveaways for all participating students. The event is co-sponsored by Safe Kids Middlesex County Coalition which is led by Dunellen resident Diana J. Starace. Scam Using Somerset County Sheriff’s Office Phone Number

Scammers are using the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office phone number and impersonating themselves as sheriff’s office personnel to get victims to make payments on false warrants. “The public should know that the sheriff’s office always serves warrants in person and will never call for money or personal information,” Sheriff Frank J. Provenzano said. If you have received any calls from scammers, call the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office at 908-231-7140 ext.9. Garlic Growing Workshop at the EARTH Center

The Rutgers Master Gardeners’ “Growing Garlic in Your Garden” workshop is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 25 at the EARTH Center located in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park, 42 Riva Ave., South Brunswick. “The 2015 gardening workshops series at the EARTH Center is a great opportunity for those who cannot commit to the weekday sessions of the Master Gardeners classes,” said Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios. “I hope many people will register for this class; not just gardening enthusiasts, but anyone who wants to learn more about cooking or gardening.”

Strike & Spare to reopen as NJ’s first Bowlmor location

After a 4-month, multi-million dollar renovation, AMF Strike & Spare Lanes will reopen as New Jersey’s first Bowlmor Lanes location, Bowlmor Green Brook. To celebrate the opening, guests are invited to enjoy one free game of bowling on Saturday, October 3 from 3pm-5pm, as Magic 98.3 FM broadcasts live from the venue, hosted by DJ Chris McCoy. Bowlmor Green Brook features 48 blacklight lanes, a massive central “star bar,” and video walls. Dunellen among towns under drought watch

Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin today issued a drought watch for New Jersey’s Northeast, Central, and Coastal North water supply regions, urging residents in the affected areas to voluntarily conserve water and for the rest of the state to practice wise water use due to continued dry weather and above-average temperatures. Dunellen is part of the Central region along with other towns in Middlesex, Somerset, and Union counties. The drought watch is prompted by continued rainfall deficits that have decreased reservoir, ground water and streamflow levels in the three regions. The purpose of the watch is to raise public awareness, formally alert all water suppliers in the region of the situation, and to seek voluntary cooperation to preserve existing supplies in the affected regions, with water demand still high. Chimney Rock Road Bridge Finally Opens

The new Chimney Rock Road bridge over Route 22 in Bridgewater officially opened this week, with two new traffic lights fully activated. On Monday, Sept. 21, both signalized intersections along Chimney Rock Road at the Route 22 Eastbound Local roadway and Route 22 Westbound Ramps A/B were placed into final operation and fully opened to traffic. The new Chimney Rock Road bridge over the Route 22 Eastbound and Westbound Express roadways is now fully functional. Middlesex County offering passport processing hours this Saturday

The Middlesex County Clerk’s Office will be open during special weekend hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26 to process U.S. Passport applications. The Middlesex County Clerk’s Office is joining the U.S. Department of State in celebrating Passport Awareness Month. “We are pleased to offer this service for those residents who would like to apply for a U.S. passport for their fall and winter travel, but find it difficult to take time off from work or to take children out of school during the week,” said Middlesex County Clerk Elaine M. Flynn. In addition to processing passports on this special event, the County Clerk’s Office will also be administering Notary oaths to those who have applied to the State of New Jersey to become a Notary Public and have already received their commission back from the State. Two free composting seminars are being held at the Middlesex County EARTH Center in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park, 42 Riva Ave., South Brunswick. Classes run about 2 hours and feature an overview and explanation of two composting techniques:

Backyard Composting: 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 \
Vermi-Composting (using worms): 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21

Middlesex County Arts Grant Program Accepting Applications

The Middlesex County Office of Cultural and Heritage is pleased to announce that its 2016 Arts Grant Program will soon be accepting online applications. Not-for-profit organizations and municipal groups based in Middlesex County are eligible to apply. The grant cycle covers the period of January 15 to December 31, 2016. Grant applications are processed electronically using an online submission program.
