EARTH Center Open House to Feature Home-Grown Produce Contest

The Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County will host its Garden Field Day/Open House from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 20 at the EARTH Center located in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park at 42 Riva Avenue in South Brunswick. The rain date will be August 21. The day will be filled with activities for the whole family, including garden tours, presentations and showcases on gardening and landscaping and live music. This day will also celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of Rutgers University. Throughout the event, the Extension’s Agriculture Office and Rutgers Master Gardeners will offer advice on horticulture and environmental stewardship while guiding visitors through various teaching gardens and learning projects. Faber Students Learn the Art of Writing and Illustrating Books

First Grade

On June 8, first grade students showed off the books they created during their writing workshop under the tutelage of their teachers Helen Arvanitis, Nancy Cortese, Barbara Guhl and Brenda Perry. The event started with Media Specialist Beth Willoughby sharing “The Day the Crayons Came Home.” After the story, students shared their stories about the aquarium, the rainforest, space, and a safari to Africa with families and staff members. Second grade students held their Young Author’s Celebration on June 14. The students used various different poetry styles they learned from their teachers Shari Krauss, Nicole Mundy, Laura Palmer and Melissa Vanraes to create poetry books. EARTH Butterfly House Opens for Summer Season

The Butterfly House in the Middlesex County EARTH Center has opened for the summer season. The “hoop house” which is maintained by the Master Gardener Program is filled with plants that feed and shelter butterflies and larvae native to New Jersey. Information is available on butterfly host plants and attracting butterflies to local yards and gardens. Hours are from 10 a.m. to noon every Saturday and Sunday in June, July and August (weather permitting). There is no admission charge. Continue Reading →

Kids Learn About Safety at Annual Sports Rodeo

Dunellen’s annual All-Wheeled Sports Rodeo was held on June 3 at the Dunellen Fire House. The event was sponsored by Safe Kids, Middlesex County; Keep Middlesex Moving; RWJ University Hospital; John P. Faber School Green and Safety Committees; Dunellen Police Department; Dunellen Fire Department; Dunellen Rescue Squad; and Effinger Sporting Goods. Dunellen children learned and practiced the “Rules of the Road” on an obstacle course, learning about safe bike handling and bike maintenance as well as safe use of skateboards, scooters, and rollerblades. Only one lottery ticket matched the four white balls and the Powerball drawn for the Wednesday, June 8 drawing winning the $150,000 third-tier prize. PTO Holds Tricky Tray

The Dunellen Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) held its annual Tricky Tray June 4 in the Faber Elementary School gym. The PTO’s largest fundraising event was attended by over 175 people. Approximately 300 baskets were created by PTO volunteers from donations from local merchants and residents. Prizes ranged from basketballs to a grand prize, an Xbox 1. EARTH Center Lawn Mower Maintenance Workshop June 18

The Master Gardeners of Middlesex County will hold a free workshop on the “A-Z of Lawn Mower Maintenance” from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 18 at the EARTH Center in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park in South Brunswick. This “hands-on” workshop will teach the “dos and don’ts” of lawn mower maintenance and will include such topics as: mower safety, cleaning air filters, changing engine oil and other tips on how to keep your lawn mower properly maintained. Also covered will be basic techniques on how to encourage a healthy lawn while limiting the use of pesticides. The program is FREE, but registration is required by June 15. Middlesex County History Day To Be Held June 5

The Middlesex County History Day will be returning to East Jersey Old Town Village from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 5. Old Town Village is located inside Johnson Park at 1050 River Road in Piscataway. The site-wide celebration will be filled with demonstrations, performances, and other family-friendly activities. Demonstrations will include blacksmithing, open-hearth cooking, yarn spinning, weaving, chair caning, antique clocks, lacemaking and 19th-century decorative painting techniques. Members of the Dunellen Historical Society, including author John Triolo will have a booth in the History Tent which will also feature exhibits and displays by other historical societies and groups. Dunellen Police Report | May 2016

On 5/30/2016 at 1:44 pm – Patrol responded to a 911 call for a possible drug overdose at a North Avenue residence. Officers arrived to find an unconscious female surrounded by evidence of heroin use. Patrol administered two doses of Narcan Naloxone which reverses the effect of opiates. After the second dose, the victim regained consciousness.
