Middlesex County Disability Resources Fair on March 18

The Middlesex County Office of Aging and Disabled Services is holding its second annual resources fair for people with disabilities and their caregivers, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 18 at the Edison Senior Center, 2963 Woodbridge Avenue in Edison. “Disability Connections: An Information and Resource Fair” will offer information about resources and support services available to persons with disabilities in Middlesex County. Attendees will have the chance to visit with local social service agencies and businesses and to hear a special presentation from Carole Tonks, Director of the Alliance Center for Independence. Horticultural Therapy Workshop on March 18

In honor of National Horticultural Therapy Week is March 19-25, the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County is presenting a new workshop entitled, Horticultural Therapy in the Home. This seminar is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 18 at the EARTH Center, located in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park at 42 Riva Avenue, South Brunswick. Studying Master Gardener Althea McDonald LMHC, Psy.D., HT, will present an introduction to the art of Horticultural Therapy, followed by an immersive activity. Middlesex County Seeking WWI Memorabilia

The Middlesex County Office of Culture and Heritage is seeking objects to display in its upcoming exhibit at the Cornelius Low House commemorating the centennial of America’s entry in World War I.

The exhibit titled “Over There, Over Here: New Jersey During World War I” will focus on the stories of New Jerseyans and the effect the war had on those at home and fighting abroad. To add an even greater local connection to the exhibit, the Culture and Heritage Office is seeking objects for display. Objects may include military uniforms, medals, diaries, historic photographs, Red Cross or Salvation Army memorabilia, paper items, household objects and more. Dunellen’s Integrated Preschool Program Accepting Applicants

The Dunellen Board of Education (BOE) is currently accepting applications through May 15, 2017 for its tuition-based integrated preschool program at John P. Faber School. This program provides an opportunity for typically developing 4-year olds and Special Needs preschoolers to be educated together. The program has a capacity of 22 integrated preschool students and seats will be filled on a first come – first served basis after receipt of a nonrefundable tuition deposit. For the 2016-17 School Year, the cost of the program for Dunellen residents will be $4,000 for the school year; non-Dunellen Residents will be considered at an annual tuition of $5,000. Faber Honors Two Staff Members

This winter, Faber Elementary School selected as their Teacher of the Year, Stacey Malinowski and as their Support Person of the Year, Ana Torres. Malinowski teaches English Language Learners (ELL students). According to Faber principal Gary Lubisco, Jr., “Ms. Malinowski is an excellent teacher, she is always there for any staff member or student, no question or problem is too big or small for her to help out with. She is a great person to work with.” Although Malinowski has been working primarily at Faber School for 17 years, she also taught at the higher grade levels earlier in her career, when there were fewer students speaking English as a second language. Mayor Is Early Supporter of Guadagno

Dunellen mayor Robert Seader was among the first hundred New Jersey political figures to personally endorse New Jersey’s Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno as the Republican Party’s gubernatorial candidate. He was joined by two other Middlesex County mayors: Owen Henry of Old Bridge and Kennedy J. O’Brien of Sayreville. Guadagno’s representatives have since released two more lists of endorsements, adding two additional Middlesex County mayors: Matthew Anesh of South Plainfield and John Krenzel of South River. Of the six Republican-led municipalities in Middlesex County, only one other Republican mayor has not provided an endorsement, Cranbury’s David Cook. In addition to Seader, Guadagno has also received nods from Borough Councilman Jason Cilento and Dunellen GOP Municipal Chair Harry Buttito Jr., as well as many of Middlesex County’s GOP Organization Leaders including:

Two-Car Traffic Accident Last Friday

Two Middlesex County women were injured on Friday, February 24 when their vehicles collided during the evening’s rush hour. The accident occurred at 5:37 PM at the intersection of First Street and North Washington Avenue. According to Dunellen Police Sergeant Jeffrey Del Buono, a Dunellen resident driving a 2013 Hyundai, east on First Street failed to stop at the stop sign on First Street and North Washington Avenue. An Edison resident driving south on North Washington Avenue in a 2016 Subaru collided into the Hyundai. The Hyundai was thrust forward, hitting a telephone pole located near Washington Park’s event sign. Continue Reading →

Dunellen Police Report | February 2017

On 2/27/2017 at 11:45 pm – A Plainfield resident was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana under 50 grams and hindering apprehension following a motor vehicle stop. He gave a false name and was also found to have warrants out of Plainfield and the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office. After being processed at Dunellen Police Headquarters and issued a court date, he was then transferred to the custody of the Plainfield Police Department on their warrant. On 2/27/2017 at 2:42 pm – Patrol responded to the Dunellen High School for an activated fire alarm. After no fire was found, an investigation with school officials of the security footage was conducted. Continue Reading →

County Offers Introduction to Micro-irrigation Workshop at the EARTH Center

The Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County is holding a free new gardening seminar entitled, “An Introduction to Micro-irrigation.”

This workshop is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, March 4 at the EARTH Center in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park, 42 Riva Ave., South Brunswick. Micro-irrigation allows for drip irrigation to be achieved with household water pressure. This form of irrigation has been used by farmers for decades and has been known to save time, reduce weeds, produce healthier plants and work especially well during droughts or dry seasons. The workshop will demonstrate the specialized attachments used for irrigation lines that are widely available in hardware and garden stores. Nearly $10K raised for American Heart Association

Faber School students and Dunellen school staff participated in “Jump Rope for Heart” and “Wear Red for Women” which are sponsored by the American Heart Association. According to gym teacher, Sue Gavin, “this is a great annual event that helps students realize how they can help others and make a change in the world. This event also allows students to learn about heart health and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.”

The students participated in a variety of heart healthy exercises during gym classes and along with school staff, raised over $9,500 to help the American Heart Association fund research and educational initiatives. Continue Reading →
