The Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders will hold a Special Meeting on the County “ADA” Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan on Tuesday February 23, 2016 immediately following the regular Freeholder Meeting at 6:30 p.m.This special meeting is open to any citizen of the County and feedback is appreciated as to how the County can better serve those of the public with disabilities. Somerset County Sheriff’s Office to Start Using Body Worn Cameras

Sheriff Frank J. Provenzano has announced the implementation of Body Worn Cameras for his officers at the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office. The body worn cameras were purchased in 2015 with funds from a federal Drug Enforcement Agency grant. The Sheriff’s Office has been working in close collaboration with Somerset County Prosecutor Geoffrey D. Soriano to develop standard operating procedures for the use of the body worn cameras in accordance with the New Jersey Attorney General’s Directive 2015-1. The cameras also can aid in investigations by capturing real-time incidents as they are occurring; assist in the collection of evidence; memorialize information at crime scenes; improve the ability to identify suspects and enhance the accuracy of victim and witness statements. Veterans Town Hall & Claims Clinic, Dec. 2

A Veterans Town Hall Meeting & Claims Clinic will be held on Wednesday, December 2, on the first floor of the Somerset County Human Services Building at 27 Warren Street, Somerville. The claims clinic will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The town hall meeting, hosted by Michael Blazis, director of the Newark Regional Office, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The VA has invited Congressional stakeholders, veteran service organizations, non-governmental organizations and other community partners to attend. Veterans, their families and survivors, organizations and individuals who work with or on behalf of veterans, as well as the general public are invited to attend to share information, hear feedback and get answers to questions about VA benefits, including compensation, pension, insurance, loan guaranty, vocational rehabilitation and employment, and education-benefit programs.

Somerset County holds county-wide history event

The Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission, in collaboration with thirty local historical organizations and tourism partners, has designated the weekend of October 10 & 11, 2015 “Weekend Journey through the Past.” During this two-day period, many of the County’s significant historic sites will be open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Saturday, and 12:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Sunday. This year’s event will feature four (4) “first time” participating sites: The Hageman Farm in Somerset (Franklin Twp); the Texier House Museum in Watchung; Blawenburg Reformed Church in Blawenburg (Montgomery Twp.); and the Dr. J. Vermeule House in Green Brook. Many of the sites have significant Revolutionary War histories which have contributed to the area’s designation as the “Crossroads of the American Revolution State Heritage Area”. Scammers are using the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office phone number and impersonating themselves as sheriff’s office personnel to get victims to make payments on false warrants. “The public should know that the sheriff’s office always serves warrants in person and will never call for money or personal information,” Sheriff Frank J. Provenzano said. If you have received any calls from scammers, call the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office at 908-231-7140 ext.9. Chimney Rock Road Bridge Finally Opens

The new Chimney Rock Road bridge over Route 22 in Bridgewater officially opened this week, with two new traffic lights fully activated. On Monday, Sept. 21, both signalized intersections along Chimney Rock Road at the Route 22 Eastbound Local roadway and Route 22 Westbound Ramps A/B were placed into final operation and fully opened to traffic. The new Chimney Rock Road bridge over the Route 22 Eastbound and Westbound Express roadways is now fully functional. Leadership Somerset is a year-long adult community leadership program. which allows participants enhance their leadership skills while broadening their knowledge of community issues within Somerset County. Applications are accepted from adults who live or work in Somerset County, NJ.
