Petra (Wiegand) Heleniak, 70, died on September 12, 2017 at home in Dunellen, NJ surrounded by her family. Petra was born in Dermbach, Thuringen (East Germany) to Walter and Else Wiegand. At the age of 5, she was smuggled to West Germany and grew up in the state of Hesse. After graduating from nursing school, she began working in a West Germany hospital where she met her husband, Edwin. After their marriage in 1969, they moved to his hometown of Dunellen where she lived for almost half a century. Continue Reading →

On 8/31/2017 at 8:02 am – Police received a walk-in report of fraud. A resident of Front Street reported that over the previous year they had been defrauded; this incident has been forwarded to the Detective Bureau. On 8/31/2017 at 7:11 pm – Police received a walk-in report from a resident of Plainfield that her cell phone had been stolen while shopping at a North Avenue business. On 8/28/2017 at 10:01 pm – Police responded to the report of a vehicle fire on Front Street. The arriving units located a fully involved house fire and ensured all residents had safely evacuated. Middlesex County Offers Lecture About Native American Art and Culture

Middlesex County’s Office of Art and History invites you to a free lecture about the rich legacy of Native American arts and culture, how that culture has evolved, and the key issues Native American artists now face. “Native American Arts and Cultural Practices in America” is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 19 at the Rutgers Scholarly Communications Center on the New Brunswick campus, in the Teleconference/Lecture Hall, 4th Floor, Archibald S. Alexander Library, located at 169 College Ave. John Haworth, Senior Executive Emeritus of the Smithsonian – National Museum of the American Indian – New York, will share his knowledge about the issues impacting Native Americans today. A meet-and-greet session begins at 5 p.m.; the program begins at 6 p.m.

Three Teachers Retire from Faber

The hallways of Faber School will sound a little different this fall. Three of its teachers, Sue Gavin, Jane Campbell and Lou DeLauro have retired from the Dunellen Schol District. Sue Gavin was been a physical education teacher at Faber School. In addition to teaching physical education, she also was responsible for planning many exciting school events including National Bike to School Day, ACES, the Bike Rodeo, and creating a garden in the courtyard of the school. County Offers Workshop on “Successful Gardens in Small Spaces”

If you would like to grow fresh produce at home, but aren’t sure if you have enough room for planting, join the Master Gardeners of Middlesex County for an upcoming workshop titled Successful Gardens in Small Spaces. This free workshop is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 26 from 10 a.m. to noon at the EARTH Center located in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park at 42 Riva Ave, South Brunswick. The workshop will explore square-foot gardening, a type of gardening that concentrates on a small, clearly defined area and incorporates the use of compost. Advocates say this method works great for beginning gardeners or those with disabilities, and can help in areas with poor soil. Continue Reading →

Master Gardener classes offered by Middlesex County

A new season of Master Gardener classes will be starting soon at the Middlesex County EARTH Center in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park, located at 42 Riva Ave., South Brunswick. The Master Gardeners are community volunteers trained in earth-friendly gardening and environmental principles. This is a year-long program that includes lectures and hands-on learning. Lecture classes meet for three hours once per week from mid-September through mid-April and include some outdoor time in a County park. The “hands-on” garden portion of the class meets weekly from April through mid-September (every other week in summer). Continue Reading →

Monarch Butterfly Event in Piscataway

One of the most recognizable butterfly species, the orange and black monarch, is preparing for an epic migration, and Middlesex County can give you an up-close look at this natural phenomenon. As host of a Monarch Waystation, East Jersey Old Town Village is a great location to observe and learn all about the monarchs and their behavior. Monarch Waystations provide host plants like milkweed and nectar-bearing flowers for the butterflies. These plants allow them to gain energy to migrate. Dunellen Police Report | July 2017

On 7/31/2017 at 9:05 pm – A Pennsylvania resident was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated. He was brought to Dunellen Police Headquarters for processing where he experienced a medical issue and was transported to RWJ New Brunswick by EMS. A blood sample was obtained and he was turned over to hospital staff. On 7/30/2017 at 1:21 am – A Piscataway resident was arrested for contempt of court following investigation into several individuals seen entering unlocked vehicles. He was found to have an outstanding warrant for his arrest out of Wall Township. He was brought to Dunellen Police Headquarters for processing and later issued a new court date. Continue Reading →

County’s Garden Field Day/Open House July 22

The Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County will host its Garden Field Day/Open House from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 22 at the EARTH Center located in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park at 42 Riva Ave. in South Brunswick. The rain date will be July 23. The day will be filled with activities for the whole family, including garden tours, presentations and showcases on gardening and landscaping, plus live music. Throughout the event, the Agriculture Office and the Rutgers Master Gardeners will offer advice on horticulture and environmental stewardship while guiding visitors through various teaching gardens and learning projects.
