Middlesex County History Day To Be Held June 5

The Middlesex County History Day will be returning to East Jersey Old Town Village from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 5. Old Town Village is located inside Johnson Park at 1050 River Road in Piscataway. The site-wide celebration will be filled with demonstrations, performances, and other family-friendly activities. Demonstrations will include blacksmithing, open-hearth cooking, yarn spinning, weaving, chair caning, antique clocks, lacemaking and 19th-century decorative painting techniques. Members of the Dunellen Historical Society, including author John Triolo will have a booth in the History Tent which will also feature exhibits and displays by other historical societies and groups. Dunellen Police Report | May 2016

On 5/30/2016 at 1:44 pm – Patrol responded to a 911 call for a possible drug overdose at a North Avenue residence. Officers arrived to find an unconscious female surrounded by evidence of heroin use. Patrol administered two doses of Narcan Naloxone which reverses the effect of opiates. After the second dose, the victim regained consciousness. ‘The Little Mermaid’ to Open Middlesex County’s Plays-In-The-Park Season

Middlesex County’s Plays-in-the-Park will open its Summer 2016 season with the adaptation of Disney’s animated movie The Little Mermaid. The show runs from June 15 to 25, excluding Sunday, June 19. The show begins at 8:30p.m., except for the performances on June 20 and 21, which start at 7:30 p.m.

Plays-in-the-Park is located at the Stephen J. Capestro Theater within Roosevelt Park at 1 Pine Drive in Edison, NJ. The Little Mermaid will be directed and produced by Gary P. Cohen and choreographed by Michelle Massa. The musical director will be John Brzozowski. Continue Reading →

“Click It or Ticket” Campaign in Dunellen

Dunellen Police Department is cracking down on unbuckled motorists and passengers as part of the national “Click it or Ticket” campaign. The campaign, which began on May 23 and will continue until June 5, includes high visibility law enforcement seat belt checkpoints and saturation patrols, as well as local and national publicity efforts designed to increase awareness of the life-saving value of seat belts. “Using a seat belt is the simplest way for a driver and his or her passengers to protect themselves when traveling,” said Gary Poedubicky, Acting Director of the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety. “In 2013, 21,000 people in the US were killed in traffic crashes, and almost half of them were unrestrained.”

According to Poedubicky, a key focus will be on the use of seat belts by rear seat passengers. New Jersey’s front seat belt usage rate currently stands at 91.36%, but only 39% of adult backseat users are buckling up. Continue Reading →

Red Nose Day at Faber

Students and Staff at Faber School showcased their red noses at its final Faber Friday of the school year. Celebrated on May 20, a week prior to National Red Nose Day, a fundraising effort of Comic Relief, Inc. for alleviation of childhood poverty, the event highlighted Faber’s student and staff achievements. It also was used to remind students and staff to have fun. Faber’s Red Nose Day was organized by the student council and the second grade to raise monies for various charities that assist children. Author and Holocaust Survivor visits Lincoln Middle School

Johanna Reiss, author of The Upstairs Room spoke to Dunellen’s seventh and eighth grade students about her craft and surviving the Holocaust. Reiss shared her story with the students to remind them that we need to accept everyone and embrace our diversity. She was born in the Netherlands and now lives in New York. Her book The Upstairs Room and the book The Journey Back are about her living in hiding as a Jewish child during World War II and her first year after the Holocaust. According to Lincoln Middle School principal Robert Altmire, “these experiences allow students to understand the struggles people have gone through and empathize with them.”

The presentation was arranged with funds from the Dunellen PTO and organized by PTO member, Ellen Byrnes and Ashley Merkler, teacher at Lincoln Middle School. Continue Reading →

Memorial Day Assembly at Faber School

Faber School staff and students learned about Memorial Day with help from the American Legion and instruction aid and veteran Don Musson. Dunellen American Legion Post #119 lead off the ceremony with an honor guard. This was followed by Choir Director, Michelle Nannas leading the audience in the Star Spangled Banner. Students then learned about the history and importance of the day. Bill Lamire announced the American Legion’s coloring contest winners: first place went to 4th grade student Grace Walker, second place went to 5th grade student Sophia Valez and third place went to 4th grade student Anaya Henry. President Obama to Speak at RU Graduation Sunday

Sunday promises to be filled with excitement and traffic in and around Rutgers University (RU). Over 40,000 people are expected by RU on its New Brunswick and Piscataway campuses for its 250th anniversary commencement and other school ceremonies. President Barack Obama will be providing the commencement speech at High Point Solutions Stadium, Busch Campus in Piscataway. He also will be receiving an honorary degree. Although the ceremony does not start until 12:30 p.m., attendees have been advised to arrive early since they will be subject to what the RU website calls “airport-like security.” Continue Reading →

Dunellen Police Report | April 2016

[ETA 4/29-30/16 posts] On 4/30/16 at 1:56am – A New Brunswick resident was arrested and charged with DWI. Patrol observed a vehicle cut off another vehicle while making a turn on to New Market Road. While speaking with the driver, patrol detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath and observed the driver’s eyes to be bloodshot and watery. He was then administered field sobriety tests and subsequently placed under arrest for Driving While Intoxicated. Based on breath samples, the driver’s BAC was determined to be more than double the legal limit. Continue Reading →

County Birthday Bash for Dunellen Residents Age 90+ on May 17

The Middlesex County Office of Aging and Disabled Services will hold birthday parties for senior citizens age 90 and over as part of its National Older Americans Month celebration. For Dunellen residents, the event will be held on May 17 at the Piscataway Senior Center starting at 11 a.m. The Piscataway luncheon will also honor residents of Carteret, Highland Park, Middlesex, New Brunswick, Piscataway and South Plainfield. “We are happy we can give these special seniors a chance to enjoy the “limelight” with the recognition luncheon and entertainment,” said Gerry Mackenzie, Community Services Department Head.
