The Rutgers Master Gardeners will offer a free gardening workshop, “Growing Garlic in Your Garden” 10 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9 at the EARTH Center located in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park, 42 Riva Avenue, South Brunswick. Garlic takes up little space, can be planted in the fall and has many uses in cooking. The workshop will begin with an indoor presentation followed by an outdoor, hands-on planting session. The Middlesex County Office of Culture and Heritage is hosting “Art: A Path to Wellness,” a panel discussion on the many ways that the arts help people heal and achieve well-being. This free event is scheduled to be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30 at the Crossroads Theatre, 7 Livingston Avenue in New Brunswick. Four innovators in the field of Arts & Health will share their unique experiences and perspectives on how and why the arts are beneficial in all stages of life: Donald Parker, President and CEO of Carrier Clinic, Jacqueline Guttman, Founder of Arts for Life Network of NJ, Barbara Romito, Director of the Child Life Program at the Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, and Edie Elkan, Founder of Bedside Harp™. National Voter Registration Day will be held on September 27. The event is a concerted effort by organizations around the country to encourage voting in the upcoming general election. In 2008, 6 million Americans did not vote because they missed a registration deadline or did not know how to register. The deadline to register for the November 8 election is October 18. Workshops are being offered to show Middlesex County residents how to cut down on trash and create a natural gardening resource by composting yard waste and kitchen scraps. Two free composting seminars are being held at the Middlesex County EARTH Center in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park, 42 Riva Ave., South Brunswick. Classes run about 2 hours and feature an overview and explanation of two composting techniques:
Vermi-Composting (using worms): 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12
Backyard Composting: 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15

The Middlesex County 4-H Open House will be held on Sunday, Oct. 2 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the 4-H Youth Center, located at 645 Cranbury Road in East Brunswick. Though typically thought of as an agriculturally focused organization as a result of its history, 4-H today focuses on citizenship, healthy living, science, engineering and technology programs for youth grades K through 13. Attendees will have the chance to observe animal and dance demonstrations throughout the event. There will also be opportunities to speak with current 4-H members and volunteer leaders, so children can join some of the over 30 clubs that best reflect their interests and adults can volunteer to help the groups best suited to their skills. Phillip C. Heiney, Sr. has resigned as president of the Dunellen Board of Education (BOE). The long-time Dunellen resident had been arrested last month on charges that he used a file-sharing network to share videos of child pornography over the Internet. Heiney was not in attendance when the BOE voted 7-0 at its regular monthly board meeting on Tuesday, September 6 to accept the resignation. The board then voted to approve Jeffrey Portik, who had been vice-president as the new president and George Johnson as vice-president. The resignation leaves the BOE with a postion open on the board. On 8/28/2016 at 8:26 pm – A Plainfield resident was arrested for Contempt of Court following a motor vehicle stop on North Avenue. An investigation revealed that she had a warrant for her arrest out of Union Township (Hunterdon). She was transported to Dunellen Police Headquarters where she was processed and received a new court date. On 8/28/2016 at 9:21 pm – A Plainfield resident was arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated following an investigation of a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of North and Washington Avenues. He was brought to Dunellen Police Headquarters where he was processed and later released to a sober party. Continue Reading →
Dunellen Defender Fire Co., No. 1’s downtown street fair which was to be held on September 11 has been cancelled. Fire Chief Jonathan Scott promised,”It will return next year.” The fire department’s next fundraising event will be the Designer Hand Bag Bingo Party on November 5. Dunellen’s first Olympian Sydney McLaughlin was honored in a ceremony held at Columbia Park this past Saturday. McLaughlin started this year’s track season with some stumbles (her and her mother’s health issues) but finished with the kind of success that usually does not come to a track athlete at such a young age. The rising-senior at Union Catholic High School broke her own World Youth Best and World Junior Record time when she competed at July’s US Olympic Trials in the 400m Hurdles, won the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships in the 400m Hurdles, and won two events at the New Balance High School National Championships (400m Hurdles and Swedish medley relay). Awards that she collected included Gatorade Athlete of the Year, NJ.com’s Track and Field Athlete of the Year, and USATF Athlete of the Week. It was what happened earlier this month that truly made it a season to remember: McLaughlin, as the youngest US track and field team in over four decades, made it to the 400m Hurdles semifinals at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Dunellen will salute hometown Olympian Sydney McLaughlin on Saturday morning during a “celebration ceremony” to welcome the 17-year-old hurdler home from Rio. Residents are encouraged to arrive at Columbia Park by 10:30 a.m. on Saturday wearing red, white and blue. The ceremony for McLaughlin will include an award presentation by Mayor Bob Seader. McLaughlin, a Dunellen resident, is the youngest track and field Olympian for Team USA since 1972. And on August 15 and 16, her hometown cheered her on as she competed in Rio, 5000 miles away.
