The Dunellen Police Department will be cracking down on distracted drivers during April as part of New Jersey’s “U Drive. U Text. U Pay.” enforcement campaign. Beginning April 1 and running through April 21, the high visibility law enforcement initiative will target motorists who engage in dangerous distracted driving behaviors such as talking on hand-held cell phones and sending text messages while driving. New Jersey American Water (NJAW) will begin routine flushing of the water distribution system in Dunellen from March 20 to April 3 during the hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The flushing which is part of the system maintenance program also allows NJAW to monitor and maintain fire hydrants. When crews are working in your area, there may be noticeably reduced pressure or discolored water. If water is discolored, let it run until it runs clear before using. On Sunday, March 12, Dunellen parents with children enrolled in the Dunellen School District received the following notice from Superintendant Gene Mosley via text, email, and/or phone call. “Over the weekend there were rumors circulating that a student who was scheduled to return to school on Monday, March 13, was planning to cause harm in the high school. School administrators, along with the superintendent, and members of the Dunellen Police Department investigated throughout the weekend and found those rumors to be unsubstantiated and not credible. When your children arrive for school tomorrow they will be greeted by school administrators, the superintendent, and members of the Dunellen Police Department who are all working together to make sure that every day in the Dunellen School District is a good day. “Read Across America” was celebrated at John P. Faber Elementary School the entire week of February 28-March 3, 2017. The event is held at schools across the country to remind students about the importance of reading. It was originally created by the National Education Association twenty years ago to coincide with children’s author Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel’s birthday on March 2. The week-long Faber program was coordinated by Beth Willoughby, the school’s media specialist. Students had many guest readers throughout the week including Dunellen High School administrators, retired teachers, Somerset Patriots’ mascot Sparkee and media relations/broadcasting manager Marc Schwartz, representatives from the NJ Devils, Dunellen Fire Department members, and other community figures. The Middlesex County Office of Aging and Disabled Services is holding its second annual resources fair for people with disabilities and their caregivers, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 18 at the Edison Senior Center, 2963 Woodbridge Avenue in Edison. “Disability Connections: An Information and Resource Fair” will offer information about resources and support services available to persons with disabilities in Middlesex County. In honor of National Horticultural Therapy Week is March 19-25, the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County is presenting a new workshop entitled, Horticultural Therapy in the Home. This seminar is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 18 at the EARTH Center, located in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park at 42 Riva Avenue, South Brunswick. The Middlesex County Office of Culture and Heritage is seeking objects to display in its upcoming exhibit at the Cornelius Low House commemorating the centennial of America’s entry in World War I.
The exhibit titled “Over There, Over Here: New Jersey During World War I” will focus on the stories of New Jerseyans and the effect the war had on those at home and fighting abroad. To add an even greater local connection to the exhibit, the Culture and Heritage Office is seeking objects for display. Objects may include military uniforms, medals, diaries, historic photographs, Red Cross or Salvation Army memorabilia, paper items, household objects and more. The Dunellen Board of Education (BOE) is currently accepting applications through May 15, 2017 for its tuition-based integrated preschool program at John P. Faber School. This program provides an opportunity for typically developing 4-year olds and Special Needs preschoolers to be educated together. The program has a capacity of 22 integrated preschool students and seats will be filled on a first come – first served basis after receipt of a nonrefundable tuition deposit. For the 2016-17 School Year, the cost of the program for Dunellen residents will be $4,000 for the school year; non-Dunellen Residents will be considered at an annual tuition of $5,000. This winter, Faber Elementary School selected as their Teacher of the Year, Stacey Malinowski and as their Support Person of the Year, Ana Torres. Malinowski teaches English Language Learners (ELL students). According to Faber principal Gary Lubisco, Jr., “Ms. Malinowski is an excellent teacher, she is always there for any staff member or student, no question or problem is too big or small for her to help out with. She is a great person to work with.” Although Malinowski has been working primarily at Faber School for 17 years, she also taught at the higher grade levels earlier in her career, when there were fewer students speaking English as a second language.
