Registrations Being Accepted for County Sheriff’s Civilian Academy

The Sheriff’s Office will hold an 8-week-long Sheriff’s Civilian Academy for residents of Middlesex County beginning April 2016. The program is designed to educate Middlesex County residents on the various functions and duties of the Sheriff’s Office. Applications are being accepted now for the program, which will be held at the Middlesex County Police Training Center at North Patrol Road in Edison. The first session will take place on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 from 7 to 9 p.m. Classes will continue weekly on Wednesdays. One Saturday class will be held. Continue Reading →

Santa to be special guest at 4-H Breakfast

On Saturday, December 5, 2015 Middlesex County 4-H invites you to enjoy “Breakfast with Santa and His Furry and Feathered Friends” at the Middlesex County
4-H Center, located at 645 Cranbury Rd. in East Brunswick.Parents and children are invited to enjoy a pancake breakfast, meet Santa, and meet Santa’s furry and feathered friends at our petting zoo. There are two seatings for breakfast and activities: at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Admission prices are $8 for adults, $6 for children (ages 9 & under), and includes breakfast, 1 picture per family with Santa, petting zoo, and more. Free holiday program at East Jersey Old Town Village

This season’s holidays offer plenty of music, good cheer and opportunities for togetherness. The Middlesex County Office of Culture and Heritage invites you to experience it all as it hosts its “Seasonal Traditions” holiday program at East Jersey Old Town Village in Piscataway. These special events, all free of charge, will be held at the Village from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13. Scheduled activities include:

Children’s Craft Session: 2-3 p.m.

Middlesex County’s Outdoor Ice Skating Rink Opens For Season

Middlesex County’s Roosevelt Park Family Ice Skating Rink opened for its thirteenth season on Friday, November 20. The rink is located at the Level Playing Fields Complex inside the County’s Roosevelt Park, which is adjacent to Menlo Park Mall in Edison. Per session admission is $6 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and children 17 and under. Discounts are available for multi-session passes and groups. Middlesex County offers historical podcasts

Middlesex County’s new website now feature a series of free mini podcasts or audio files that focus on state history that is bizarre or not commonly known. Known as “UnCommon History,” these podcasts are made possible by the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the Office of Cultural and Heritage and the New Jersey Historical Commission, a Division of the Department of State. Most are approximately five minutes in length. There are currently over fifty podcasts in this growing series including one on a town that used to border Dunellen and appropriately for the season, one on the Pine Barrens’ Jersey Devil. TD Bank Holds Fundraiser for FISH

On October 16, the Stelton-Piscataway branch location of TD Bank held a fundraiser for the FISH Hospitality Program (FHP). Customers donated their spare change. TD Bank, as part of its Bring Change program, also matched a portion of the coins counted that day at its Penny Arcade. A total of $3,316.54 was donated to FHP. Since 1990, FHP has given homeless families and single women temporary shelter and meals, permanent housing assistance, employment and medical attention. Continue Reading →

Garlic Growing Workshop at the EARTH Center

The Rutgers Master Gardeners’ “Growing Garlic in Your Garden” workshop is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 25 at the EARTH Center located in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park, 42 Riva Ave., South Brunswick. “The 2015 gardening workshops series at the EARTH Center is a great opportunity for those who cannot commit to the weekday sessions of the Master Gardeners classes,” said Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios. “I hope many people will register for this class; not just gardening enthusiasts, but anyone who wants to learn more about cooking or gardening.”

“Quick and Easy Ways to Include Fruits and Vegetables in your Diet” is the topic of an upcoming workshop offered by the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County. The class will take place from 12:15 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 at the EARTH Center in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park, located in South Brunswick at 42 Riva Avenue. This workshop will demonstrate ways to get the most out of your meals by adding in extra servings of fruit and vegetables. Middlesex County offering passport processing hours this Saturday

The Middlesex County Clerk’s Office will be open during special weekend hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26 to process U.S. Passport applications. The Middlesex County Clerk’s Office is joining the U.S. Department of State in celebrating Passport Awareness Month. “We are pleased to offer this service for those residents who would like to apply for a U.S. passport for their fall and winter travel, but find it difficult to take time off from work or to take children out of school during the week,” said Middlesex County Clerk Elaine M. Flynn. In addition to processing passports on this special event, the County Clerk’s Office will also be administering Notary oaths to those who have applied to the State of New Jersey to become a Notary Public and have already received their commission back from the State. County to Offer Composting Workshops

Two free composting seminars are being held at the Middlesex County EARTH Center in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park, 42 Riva Ave., South Brunswick. Classes run about 2 hours and feature an overview and explanation of two composting techniques:

Backyard Composting: 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 \
Vermi-Composting (using worms): 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21
