EARTH Center Lawn Mower Maintenance Workshop June 18

The Master Gardeners of Middlesex County will hold a free workshop on the “A-Z of Lawn Mower Maintenance” from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 18 at the EARTH Center in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park in South Brunswick. This “hands-on” workshop will teach the “dos and don’ts” of lawn mower maintenance and will include such topics as: mower safety, cleaning air filters, changing engine oil and other tips on how to keep your lawn mower properly maintained. Also covered will be basic techniques on how to encourage a healthy lawn while limiting the use of pesticides. The program is FREE, but registration is required by June 15. Middlesex County History Day To Be Held June 5

The Middlesex County History Day will be returning to East Jersey Old Town Village from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 5. Old Town Village is located inside Johnson Park at 1050 River Road in Piscataway. The site-wide celebration will be filled with demonstrations, performances, and other family-friendly activities. Demonstrations will include blacksmithing, open-hearth cooking, yarn spinning, weaving, chair caning, antique clocks, lacemaking and 19th-century decorative painting techniques. Members of the Dunellen Historical Society, including author John Triolo will have a booth in the History Tent which will also feature exhibits and displays by other historical societies and groups. ‘The Little Mermaid’ to Open Middlesex County’s Plays-In-The-Park Season

Middlesex County’s Plays-in-the-Park will open its Summer 2016 season with the adaptation of Disney’s animated movie The Little Mermaid. The show runs from June 15 to 25, excluding Sunday, June 19. The show begins at 8:30p.m., except for the performances on June 20 and 21, which start at 7:30 p.m.

Plays-in-the-Park is located at the Stephen J. Capestro Theater within Roosevelt Park at 1 Pine Drive in Edison, NJ. The Little Mermaid will be directed and produced by Gary P. Cohen and choreographed by Michelle Massa. The musical director will be John Brzozowski. Continue Reading →

President Obama to Speak at RU Graduation Sunday

Sunday promises to be filled with excitement and traffic in and around Rutgers University (RU). Over 40,000 people are expected by RU on its New Brunswick and Piscataway campuses for its 250th anniversary commencement and other school ceremonies. President Barack Obama will be providing the commencement speech at High Point Solutions Stadium, Busch Campus in Piscataway. He also will be receiving an honorary degree. Although the ceremony does not start until 12:30 p.m., attendees have been advised to arrive early since they will be subject to what the RU website calls “airport-like security.” Continue Reading →

County Birthday Bash for Dunellen Residents Age 90+ on May 17

The Middlesex County Office of Aging and Disabled Services will hold birthday parties for senior citizens age 90 and over as part of its National Older Americans Month celebration. For Dunellen residents, the event will be held on May 17 at the Piscataway Senior Center starting at 11 a.m. The Piscataway luncheon will also honor residents of Carteret, Highland Park, Middlesex, New Brunswick, Piscataway and South Plainfield. “We are happy we can give these special seniors a chance to enjoy the “limelight” with the recognition luncheon and entertainment,” said Gerry Mackenzie, Community Services Department Head. Middlesex County 4-H Hosts Summer Day Camp Program

Middlesex County boys and girls who have completed grades 3 through 6 are invited to take part in Middlesex County 4-H’s Explorations Week day camp program. The Explorations Week (E-Week) program, hosted by the Rutgers Cooperative Extension’s 4-H Youth Development program, will run Monday, July 11 to Friday, July 15, with sessions lasting from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All sessions will be held at the 4-H Youth Center located at 645 Cranbury Rd. in East Brunswick. The program aims to help the campers in several key ways: encourage creativity, promote self-confidence, help them make new friends and achieve a sense of accomplishment. Historian to Lecture on “Path to Freedom: Free African-Americans in New Jersey”

The Middlesex County Office of Culture and Heritage will host Historian Walter Greason for a lecture about the history of African-Americans in New Jersey during the 19th and 20th centuries. “Path to Freedom: Free African-Americans in New Jersey” is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9 in Crabiel Hall at Middlesex County College located at 2600 Woodbridge Avenue in Edison. The lecture will discuss the development of African-American communities in rural New Jersey during the late 19th and 20th centuries and the role of those communities in New Jersey’s history as well as the effects of suburbanization. Dr. Walter Greason is an expert on post-American Revolution racism and economic history. He has published four academic works, and holds a joint position in the Departments of History and Anthropology and Management and Decision Sciences at Monmouth University in West Long Branch. Youth Conservation Corps Summer Jobs Available

Applications are now being accepted for the Middlesex County Youth Conservation Corps, whose mission is to protect and preserve the more than 7,600 acres of Open Space owned and maintained by Middlesex County. Conservation Corps crew members earn $9.00 per hour and will work Monday through Friday from June 27 through August 19. Work will primarily take place at County Open Spaces in Old Bridge, Monroe and South Brunswick. High school and college students age 16 and over are encouraged to apply. Middlesex County Selling Composting Bins, Holding Composting Seminars

This Spring, the Middlesex County Division of Solid Waste Management will have composting bins for sale every Wednesday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 711 Jersey Avenue in New Brunswick. Different types of bins are available, including those exclusively for yard trimmings, bins that use scraps from your table and yard, and an indoor bin for vermi-composting with worms.

Three free composting seminars will be held at the Middlesex County EARTH Center in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park, 42 Riva Ave., South Brunswick. Classes run about 2 hours. Backyard Composting: 10 a.m. Sunday, April 10
Vermi-Composting (using worms): 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 19
Backyard Composting: 10 a.m. Saturday, April 16

The backyard composting seminar will introduce the basics of collecting kitchen scraps and yard waste in a compost bin, and allowing the natural breakdown to create compost, an earthy, soil-like material. Middlesex County Celebrates Irish Culture March 15

The Middlesex County Office of Culture and Heritage will host “An Evening of Irish Music, Song & Dance” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 15 at the South Amboy High School Auditorium, located at 200 Governor Hoffman Plaza on John T. O’Leary Boulevard in South Amboy. The evening’s program featuring the talents of the Daoine Irish Music Band will include dance music (jigs, reels and hornpipes) as well as hauntingly beautiful airs and songs and will be accompanied by sean nós (Irish “old-style”) dancing. The group’s instruments include fiddle, uilleann (Irish) pipes, bodhran, button accordion, whistle, flute, bouzouki and banjo. Admission is free, but registration is required.
