County’s Garden Field Day/Open House July 22

The Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County will host its Garden Field Day/Open House from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 22 at the EARTH Center located in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park at 42 Riva Ave. in South Brunswick. The rain date will be July 23. The day will be filled with activities for the whole family, including garden tours, presentations and showcases on gardening and landscaping, plus live music. Throughout the event, the Agriculture Office and the Rutgers Master Gardeners will offer advice on horticulture and environmental stewardship while guiding visitors through various teaching gardens and learning projects. Play-in-the-Park Summer Schedule

Plays-in-the-Park (PIP) has announced its upcoming summer season of musicals. All shows begin at 8 p.m. and are staged at the Stephen J. Capestro Amphitheater inside Middlesex County’s Roosevelt Park in Edison, NJ. PIP represents a unique collaboration between community theater and local government since 1963 which is sponsored by the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Middlesex County Office of Parks and Recreation. “Celebrate Middlesex County” on June 10

Middlesex County is hosting an event on Saturday, June 10 at the County’s Roosevelt Park in Edison. Festivities will begin at 11 a.m. around the lake at Roosevelt Park, Parsonage Road, Edison. “Celebrate Middlesex County” will feature free activities for the whole family, including:

• Live entertainment, including children’s entertainer, Mr. Ray
• Preview of Plays-in-the-Park’s “West Side Story” performance
• Touch the Truck activity – climb up into the driver’s seat of the County’s large trucks and vehicles
• Fishing in Roosevelt Lake (Bring poles and equipment. Bait will be provided.)
• Roller Skating (Bring a helmet.)
• Bounce houses and face-painting
• 4-H petting station, including rabbits, guinea pigs and a snake
• Food for sale from local vendors

To highlight the beautiful places within the County, residents are invited to submit a photo before June 6 with the following guidelines:

• Take a selfie at their FAVORITE spot in Middlesex County
• Share it on Facebook and Instagram
• Tag @Middlesexcntynj
• Add the hashtag #CelebrateMC2017

Finalists will be displayed at the event, and attendees will vote for their favorite photo. The winner will receive two Plays-in-the-Park tickets and a goodie bag of items.

3rd Annual Middlesex County History Day May 21

Middlesex County History Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 21. History lovers of all ages are invited to East Jersey Old Town Village, 1050 River Rd. in Piscataway, for a site-wide celebration. Historical craft demonstrations will include blacksmithing, open-pit cooking, chair caning, furniture making, antique clocks and more. County Celebrates Birthdays of Nonagenarian Residents

The Middlesex County Office of Aging and Disabled Services will once again hold Birthday Bashes for senior citizens age 90 and over as part of its National Older Americans Month celebration. Due to the popularity of these events, four lunchtime parties will be held this year. Dunellen residents are to attend the Piscataway luncheon scheduled for May 10 at 11 a.m. at the Piscataway Senior Center. Traditionally, about 150 seniors age 90 and over attend each lunch. Gardening Tools Workshop to be held May 20

“Rethinking Tools for Common Garden Chores”, a workshop by Middlesex County’s Master Gardeners is scheduled to be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 20 at the EARTH Center in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park, 42 Riva Ave. in South Brunswick. The current market for gardening tools and supplies is a wide one, with countless options to choose from. This workshop will help you narrow down those options by demonstrating of some of the garden tools and techniques that are preferred by our Master Gardeners. Primary Ballot Drawing Moved to Monday April 17, 2017

According to the N.J.S.A. 19:23-24, the upcoming ballot drawing for the 2017 Primary Election is scheduled to fall on Good Friday, a legal holiday observed by State, County and Local Government Offices on April 14, 2017. In view of this, County Clerks’ Offices throughout the State, including the Middlesex County Clerk’s Office, will hold the ballot drawing for the 2017 Primary Election at 3 p.m. on the following business day — Monday, April 17 — in accordance with N.J.S.A. 19:11 that permits for such exceptions. The public may attend the drawing, however, no video recording will be permitted during the drawing of the ballot. 4-H Flea Market May 20

The Middlesex County 4-H Flea Market is scheduled for Saturday, May 20 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the 4-H Youth Center, 645 Cranbury Rd., East Brunswick. The rain date will be May 21. Middlesex County to Hold Program about WWI

The Middlesex County Office of Culture and Heritage (MCOCH) is sponsoring “New Jersey and the Great War,” a lecture on New Jersey’s role in World War I.

A part of the MCOCH’s event series honoring the WWI Centennial, this free program is scheduled for Sunday, April 9, at the Indian Queen Tavern in East Jersey Old Town Village, 1050 River Road in Piscataway. Two sessions will be held: 1 and 3 p.m.

The First World War, also known as the Great War, lasted from July 28, 1914, to November 11, 1918, with the United States officially entering the war on April 6, 1917. Joe Bilby, Assistant Curator of the New Jersey National Guard and Militia Museum in Sea Girt, will give an overview of the events leading up to the war, the war in Europe and the impact of the conflict on New Jersey and local communities. Middlesex County to Hold Talk on 1918 Influenza Pandemic

The Middlesex County Office of Culture and Heritage will be presenting the second installment in its series of events marking the centennial of World War I. This special presentation will focus on how New Jersey was impacted by an important event that coincided with the First World War, the 1918 Influenza Pandemic. This free program is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, April 30 at East Jersey Old Town Village, 1050 River Road in Piscataway. This outbreak was one of the most severe of the 20th Century. Educator Jennifer Harmsen will examine the impact the pandemic left on New Jersey and the response by local communities. “As Americans, it is important for all of us to understand how historic events like WWI and the Influenza Pandemic still shape our lives today,” said Middlesex County Freeholder Director Ronald G.
