In 2020, Dunellen residents will continue to have curbside recycling pickups every other Wednesday by the Middlesex County Improvement Authority (MCIA). All curbside recyclable items, such as bottles, cans, paper and small flat cardboard can be mixed together in a single recycling container as they are kept separate from trash. Vintage Base Ball Club’s Inaugural Season Starts April 7

The Middlesex County Office of Arts and History is sponsoring its first vintage-style baseball team, the Liberty Base Ball Club. The team’s home games will be played at Liberty Field at East Jersey Old Town Village, located at 1050 River Rd., Piscataway. Admission to all games is free. Using rules, uniforms, customs and equipment dating back to the 1850s, the team carries on the tradition of the original Liberty Base Ball Club of New Brunswick which was organized in 1857 and, with a break for the Civil War, played until 1870. All Middlesex County residents can now take classes, train for new job opportunities and even prepare for various career certifications all for free and all from home with the introduction of SkillUp Middlesex. Middlesex County has launched this free online learning platform that offers over 4,500 courses provided by Skillsoft, a nationally recognized training provider. It builds on the programs offered through the County Office of Workforce Development’s One Stop Career Centers in New Brunswick and Perth Amboy. In 2018, Dunellen residents will have curbside recycling pickups every other Wednesday by the Middlesex County Improvement Authority (MCIA). All curbside recyclable items, such as bottles, cans, paper and small flat cardboard can be mixed together in a single recycling container as they are kept separate from trash. Paper that is acceptable for collection includes: Newspaper, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, brown paper bags, nonmetallic wrapping paper, office records, computer paper, file folders, receipts, telephone books, softcover books, hardcover books, greeting cards, paperboard (such as non-waxcoated food and cereal boxes), pizza boxes, tissue boxes, shoe boxes and gift boxes. Metal that is acceptable for collection includes: Tin, steel, aluminum and bimetal cans (such as soda, beer, canned pet food, soup and tuna cans). Middlesex County Offers Lecture About Native American Art and Culture

Middlesex County’s Office of Art and History invites you to a free lecture about the rich legacy of Native American arts and culture, how that culture has evolved, and the key issues Native American artists now face. “Native American Arts and Cultural Practices in America” is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 19 at the Rutgers Scholarly Communications Center on the New Brunswick campus, in the Teleconference/Lecture Hall, 4th Floor, Archibald S. Alexander Library, located at 169 College Ave. John Haworth, Senior Executive Emeritus of the Smithsonian – National Museum of the American Indian – New York, will share his knowledge about the issues impacting Native Americans today. A meet-and-greet session begins at 5 p.m.; the program begins at 6 p.m.

County Offers Workshop on “Successful Gardens in Small Spaces”

If you would like to grow fresh produce at home, but aren’t sure if you have enough room for planting, join the Master Gardeners of Middlesex County for an upcoming workshop titled Successful Gardens in Small Spaces. This free workshop is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 26 from 10 a.m. to noon at the EARTH Center located in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park at 42 Riva Ave, South Brunswick. The workshop will explore square-foot gardening, a type of gardening that concentrates on a small, clearly defined area and incorporates the use of compost. Master Gardener classes offered by Middlesex County

A new season of Master Gardener classes will be starting soon at the Middlesex County EARTH Center in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park, located at 42 Riva Ave., South Brunswick. The Master Gardeners are community volunteers trained in earth-friendly gardening and environmental principles. This is a year-long program that includes lectures and hands-on learning. Lecture classes meet for three hours once per week from mid-September through mid-April and include some outdoor time in a County park. Monarch Butterfly Event in Piscataway

One of the most recognizable butterfly species, the orange and black monarch, is preparing for an epic migration, and Middlesex County can give you an up-close look at this natural phenomenon. As host of a Monarch Waystation, East Jersey Old Town Village is a great location to observe and learn all about the monarchs and their behavior. Monarch Waystations provide host plants like milkweed and nectar-bearing flowers for the butterflies. These plants allow them to gain energy to migrate.
