Faber Students Learn the Art of Writing and Illustrating Books

First Grade

On June 8, first grade students showed off the books they created during their writing workshop under the tutelage of their teachers Helen Arvanitis, Nancy Cortese, Barbara Guhl and Brenda Perry. The event started with Media Specialist Beth Willoughby sharing “The Day the Crayons Came Home.” After the story, students shared their stories about the aquarium, the rainforest, space, and a safari to Africa with families and staff members. Second grade students held their Young Author’s Celebration on June 14. The students used various different poetry styles they learned from their teachers Shari Krauss, Nicole Mundy, Laura Palmer and Melissa Vanraes to create poetry books. PTO Holds Tricky Tray

The Dunellen Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) held its annual Tricky Tray June 4 in the Faber Elementary School gym. The PTO’s largest fundraising event was attended by over 175 people. Approximately 300 baskets were created by PTO volunteers from donations from local merchants and residents. Prizes ranged from basketballs to a grand prize, an Xbox 1. Red Nose Day at Faber

Faber School

Students and Staff at Faber School showcased their red noses at its final Faber Friday of the school year. Celebrated on May 20, a week prior to National Red Nose Day, a fundraising effort of Comic Relief, Inc. for alleviation of childhood poverty, the event highlighted Faber’s student and staff achievements. It also was used to remind students and staff to have fun. Faber’s Red Nose Day was organized by the student council and the second grade to raise monies for various charities that assist children. Author and Holocaust Survivor visits Lincoln Middle School

Johanna Reiss, author of The Upstairs Room spoke to Dunellen’s seventh and eighth grade students about her craft and surviving the Holocaust. Reiss shared her story with the students to remind them that we need to accept everyone and embrace our diversity. She was born in the Netherlands and now lives in New York. Her book The Upstairs Room and the book The Journey Back are about her living in hiding as a Jewish child during World War II and her first year after the Holocaust. According to Lincoln Middle School principal Robert Altmire, “these experiences allow students to understand the struggles people have gone through and empathize with them.”

The presentation was arranged with funds from the Dunellen PTO and organized by PTO member, Ellen Byrnes and Ashley Merkler, teacher at Lincoln Middle School. Continue Reading →

Memorial Day Assembly at Faber School

Faber School

Faber School staff and students learned about Memorial Day with help from the American Legion and instruction aid and veteran Don Musson. Dunellen American Legion Post #119 lead off the ceremony with an honor guard. This was followed by Choir Director, Michelle Nannas leading the audience in the Star Spangled Banner. Students then learned about the history and importance of the day. Bill Lamire announced the American Legion’s coloring contest winners: first place went to 4th grade student Grace Walker, second place went to 5th grade student Sophia Valez and third place went to 4th grade student Anaya Henry. Dunellen Preschool Program Applications Due By May

The Dunellen Board of Education (BOE) is currently accepting applications through May 15, 2016 for its tuition-based integrated preschool program at John P. Faber School. The 2016-2017 school year will be the first time the BOE will allow applications from surrounding school districts. Admission is selected by a lottery system with residents of Dunellen getting preferred access to the program. The two preschool classes will consist of 15 to 18 students, several of whom require special education service, with the remainder being typically developing 4 year olds. The program based on the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards will be supervised by Director of Special Services Michael Botti along with Faber School Principal Gary “JR” Lubisco. Duct Tape + Fundraiser = Fun

Dunellen school administrators duct taped to wall 3/2016

On Friday, March 18, the Dunellen Parents Teachers Organization (PTO) hosted its family fun night at Lincoln Middle School. The fundraiser included a doughnut eating contest, bingo, and other activities. The highlight of the night was the inaugural “Duct Tape an Administrator to the Wall” event. Dunellen residents were able to purchase duct tape strips at $1/strip to place on Dunellen High School Athletic Director Dave DeNapoli, Faber Elementary School Principal Gary Lubisco, Jr., Faber Elementary School Supervisor of Instruction Brendan Tennant, and Dunellen High School Vice-Principal Cuyler Tobin. Dunellen School Celebrates Reading Week

Faber Elementary School celebrated National Education Association’s signature reading motivation and awareness program, Read Across America last week. Although the event is traditionally held on March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss, Faber students and faculty celebrated all week. Faculty decorated their classroom doors, most with Dr. Seuss-related themes and several children wore “Cat in the Hat” hats. Elizabeth Willoughby, John P. Faber Media Specialist, invited several celebrity readers to the school. To kick off the festivities on March 2, Dunellen resident Jamie Webster who writes under the pen name Jamie M. Miller read her children’s book “The Boy in the Yellow Raincoat” which deals with raising awareness and understanding of Sensory Processing Disorders. Continue Reading →

DHS holds homecoming court

Dunellen High School's 2015 Homecoming Court

Dunellen High School (DHS) held its 2015 homecoming ceremony on Friday, October 16, during the halftime break of the Destroyers-Highland Park football game. Bella Guzzi and George Kiarie were selected from the homecoming court as Homecoming Queen and King. Four couples comprised the court: Serena Consolvo & George Kiarie, Bella Guzzi with Naz Jordan, Ashley Stokes with Bowen Grasso, Gabriella Suarez with Rahim Sangiray. The court members were brought to the game in style, riding atop convertibles and escorted by police vehicles and the DHS band. The drivers/owners of the court cars were Kathy Facciponti, Anthony Mauriello, Ruth Muzik, Liz Muzik, and Bob Tunison. Continue Reading →

Dunellen participates in Walk Your Child to School Day

This morning John P. Faber Elementary School students along with their parents walked in the 16th Annual International Walk Your Child to School Day (WYCTSD). They were joined by members of the school staff and PTO as well as Dunellen firefighters, EMS personnel, and policemen. Dunellen has been participating in the international event for over a decade, rallied by Mayor Bob Seader who is an avid walker. Dunellen’s WYCTSD is currently organized by Dunellen resident Diana Starace who is the injury prevention coordinator at RWJUH and Safe Kids Middlesex County. Safe Kids Middlesex County and RWJ Trauma Center are the event’s local sponsors. Continue Reading →
