In December, Faber Elementary School students in Gina Viola’s 4th grade class donated pajamas to The Great Story Pajama Program. The Great Story Pajama Program, sponsored by Scholastic Book Clubs, gives new pajamas and story books to children living in shelters, group homes and foster care along with children in other programs that support at-risk youth. For every pair of pajamas that are donated, Scholastic donates a book. Twelve students, along with staff members Donna Maloupis and Viola, who participated donated 38 new pairs of pajamas. Dunellen Curbside Recycling Schedule – 2018

In 2018, Dunellen residents will have curbside recycling pickups every other Wednesday by the Middlesex County Improvement Authority (MCIA). All curbside recyclable items, such as bottles, cans, paper and small flat cardboard can be mixed together in a single recycling container as they are kept separate from trash. Paper that is acceptable for collection includes: Newspaper, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, brown paper bags, nonmetallic wrapping paper, office records, computer paper, file folders, receipts, telephone books, softcover books, hardcover books, greeting cards, paperboard (such as non-waxcoated food and cereal boxes), pizza boxes, tissue boxes, shoe boxes and gift boxes. Metal that is acceptable for collection includes: Tin, steel, aluminum and bimetal cans (such as soda, beer, canned pet food, soup and tuna cans). I became involved in town functions when my oldest daughter was four years old. Petra Heleniak, 70

Petra (Wiegand) Heleniak, 70, died on September 12, 2017 at home in Dunellen, NJ surrounded by her family. Petra was born in Dermbach, Thuringen (East Germany) to Walter and Else Wiegand. At the age of 5, she was smuggled to West Germany and grew up in the state of Hesse. After graduating from nursing school, she began working in a West Germany hospital where she met her husband, Edwin. After their marriage in 1969, they moved to his hometown of Dunellen where she lived for almost half a century. Continue Reading →

Three Teachers Retire from Faber

The hallways of Faber School will sound a little different this fall. Three of its teachers, Sue Gavin, Jane Campbell and Lou DeLauro have retired from the Dunellen Schol District. Sue Gavin was been a physical education teacher at Faber School. In addition to teaching physical education, she also was responsible for planning many exciting school events including National Bike to School Day, ACES, the Bike Rodeo, and creating a garden in the courtyard of the school. Dunellen Police Report | May 2017

On 5/28/2017 at 9:11 pm – A North Plainfield resident was arrested and charged with hindering apprehension following a motor vehicle stop on Prospect Avenue. He was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped for traffic violations and fictitious plates. Further investigation determined he provided officers with a false name to conceal an outstanding warrant out of Plainfield. He was transported to Dunellen Police Headquarters for processing and later turned over to the Plainfield Police Department. Dunellen Police Report | April 2017

On 4/30/2017 at 3:27 am – A Somerville resident was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and four counts of contempt of court following a motor vehicle stop for driving without headlights on. He was brought to Dunellen Police Headquarters for testing and issued a court date. Active warrants were located from Bridgewater, Raritan, and Bound Brook. The Dunellen Arts & Culture Commission (DACC) is looking to establish its brand and is holding a logo competition. The contest is open to NJ residents and those attending school in New Jersey. Water Treatment To Include New Additive

An announcement went out to Dunellen residents this morning regarding a new additive to their water supply. The additive, a bitter, white crystalline purine, would not change the taste or appearance of the water. However, according to the U.S. Water Corporation (USWC) spokesperson Hu Sreedinthiz, “those drinking the tap water would feel more alert and energetic.” This is because the additive, a methylxanthine, increases basal metabolic rate in adults and stimulates certain portions of the autonomic nervous system. QuickChek celebrates 50 years in Dunellen

“Free coffee today.” Employees of QuickChek’s Dunellen location took turns last Wednesday greeting customers with the good news. The treat was in honor of QuickChek’s golden anniversary.
