Dunellen Recreation to hold summer camp

The Dunellen Parks and Recreation Department will be holding its Summer Camp “Good Times” from June 22 to August 7. The redesigned program will have a different focus for each weekday: Monday, sports; Tuesday, science; Wednesday, a Day in Dunellen; Thursday, Movie Day at Dunellen Theater; Friday, road trip. Road trips will include a visit to Turtleback Zoo and Bowcraft Amusement Park. Dunellen children, ages 5-12 will be able to participate for one week or the entire six week session. Former Destroyers raise money for Special Olympics

Destroyer alumni, MetLife Stadium, March 21, 2015

Last month, sixteen former Destroyers donned their football jerseys to compete in the NY Giants Snow Bowl, a flag football tournament held at MetLife Stadium. The tournament benefited the Special Olympics New Jersey. The idea to participate came from Chris Maynard who had seen a Facebook post regarding the event. “I thought it was a great cause and a great way to get the guys together.” The team was required to raise at least $2000 to participate. Little League season has started

On Saturday, April 11, Dunellen’s youngest athletes, enrolled in the Dunellen Recreation Department’s T-Ball, Coach Pitch, and Softball programs, and the Dunellen Little League walked from Washington Park to McCoy Park in the annual Opening Day Parade. Acting Recreation Director Alex Miller, Dunellen Little League President Barbara McGuane, and Mayor Bob Seader addressed the players and their families at a brief ceremony at the end of the parade. April Perrine, who had starred in the Dunellen High School musical “Annie” sang the National Anthem and all of the season’s coaches and players were introduced. This season, only ten 11 and 12 year old children signed up for the Major League. Those players were incorporated into the Green Brook Little League teams. NJAW returns to normal water treatment

On April 15, New Jersey American Water (NJAW) will resume the use of chloramines (a mixture of chlorine and ammonia) to treat water at its Canal Road and Raritan Millstone Water Treatment Plants. Municipalities that receive service from these plants include Dunellen, Green Brook, Middlesex, Piscataway, and Plainfield. According to a NJAW spokesperson, chloramines have been used in the system for more than 25 years and are an effective method of water disinfection meeting all national and state drinking water standards. In mid-January, as part of its system maintenance program, NJAW temporarily changed its treatment process from chloramines to chlorine. The three-month changeover to chlorine allowed the company to perform maintenance on its chemical feed systems and remove any residual ammonia from the water distribution system. Continue Reading →

End of Era: Rome Pizza to stop selling plain slices

Starting next week, Rome Pizza will no longer be selling plain cheese pizza. Citing new food trends and lack of demand for simple ingredients, owner John Confalone said that he would now only be selling pizzas with at least two toppings. “Yes, we were named the best pizzeria in Central Jersey but no one wants to eat what their parents and grandparents grew up eating.” Confalone said.”More is more. DHS Actor Raises Money for Charity

Dunellen High School senior Calvin Nemeckay will be starring in its spring musical Annie as Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks. But unlike most actors who play the smooth-pated character, Nemeckay will not be wearing a bald cap. Instead, he shaved his head to raise money for the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. Nemeckay has already raised over 40% of his $1000 fundraising campaign goal. DHS Receives Safe Sports School Award

Dunellen High School received the 1st Team Safe Sports School award from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA). According to NATA’s website, the award was created to “recognize secondary schools around the country that provide safe environments for student athletes, the initiative reinforces the importance of providing the best level of care, injury prevention and treatment.” The application for a Safe Sports School award outlines the specific actions that will lead an athletics program to the highest safety standards for its players. A school may earn a 1st or 2nd Team award; 1st is awarded to schools that act on all of the recommended and required elements. 2nd Team is granted to schools that have completed only required elements. Board of Ed to reinstate former School Superintendent

The Dunellen Board of Education (BOE) will be holding its regular public meeting in the Dunellen High School Library on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at 7:30pm. On its agenda is a vote to approve the return of former superintendent Pio Pennisi for next year’s school term and in the interim, hiring him as a special consultant to the Board of Education on an as-needed basis. After 34 years in the Dunellen School District, Pennisi retired as superintendent in June 2014. He was hired three months later, in September, as the interim superintendent of the Netcong school system, and is still listed as “superintendent” on its official website. According to a September 2014 article printed in the NJ Herald regarding the Netcong position, “Pennisi said he will work two days per week at a rate of about $519 per day as the interim superintendent and will focus on setting the district up for future success in addition to his normal administrative duties.” Continue Reading →

“Young Pete” has pharmacy license suspended

The New Jersey State Board of Pharmacy has suspended the license of Peter J. Riccio, a Dunellen pharmacist who illegally distributed a potentially addictive, controlled-substance medication to individuals across the nation through an Internet-based scheme. “This pharmacist chose to put profits ahead of public safety and professional integrity,” Acting Attorney General John J. Hoffman said. “He provided an addictive, dangerous, and often-abused drug to patients who had not actually been seen and evaluated by the unscrupulous doctors who allegedly wrote their prescriptions. I applaud the Board of Pharmacy for suspending his license.” Riccio admitted that, in violation of Federal and New Jersey laws, he knowingly distributed the controlled drug to patients who had not actually been seen by doctors.
