Celebrate Valentine’s Day with not much planning or money

Today is Valentine’s Day. You forgot. You were too busy working. You didn’t realize that your loved one actually cared about this holiday. Whatever the reason, you now have to put something together, make it seem special, and not have to buy the Hope Diamond.

Here are some quick ideas.

  • A home-cooked meal. Don’t cook? That’s ok… just run over to Sapore’s and pick up some heart-shaped ravioli and marinara sauce. All you have to do is boil water. You don’t even have to heat up the sauce; let the ravioli do the work. To drink, try Manhattan Special espresso soda.
  • Flowers. Ponti’s Petals, Stanley’s Florist, and Tropical Supermarket. All budgets. All kinds of flowers. Tight on cash? Remember, the single rose is still a classy move.
  • Going out for dinner. One of the great things about Dunellen is that there are plenty of restaurants to choose from. Go to your favorite place or somewhere different. Most don’t need reservations (unlike the White Castle!). Recreate the “Lady and the Tramp” spaghetti scene at Giulio’s or do Dunellen Theater‘s famous “dinner at a movie” (I heard the new “Spongebob” movie is pretty romantic).
  • Jewelry. Heidi’s Cottage has some beautiful necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. All under $60 and most are handcrafted in the United States. There are other gifts available too. The United Methodist Church is having a flea market until 3 pm, and the Corner Dress Shop also has gifts.
  • Go dancing tonight. Maggie Murray’s has Katmandu playing “vintage” music, and Roxy and Duke’s LOVE / HATE show w/ Kill Matilda, Beyond Eden, Ingrid and the Defectors.
  • Wait a day. Really low on funds? February 15 is what I call “Cheap Chocolate Day.” So feign a cough and…
