Dunellen Police Department had its first “Narcan life save” last night.

At 11:30pm, officers were dispatched to the 200 Block of First Street. Sergeant Jeffrey Delbuono, Patrolman Nicholas Goldman, Patrolman Nicholas Pepe and Patrolman Marcin Nierodzik arrived on scene and found a 32 year old man from Woodbridge Township unconscious with a faint pulse and agonal breathing, laying in the roadway next to his vehicle.
The police administered oxygen as well as two rounds of Naloxone, also known as Narcan, a medication used to reverse the effects of opioid overdose. After approximately five minutes from the first Narcan shot, the man regained consciousness and started breathing on his own.
He was turned over to the Dunellen Rescue Squad for transport to RWJ University Hospital Somerset for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery. The man later admitted to using heroin just prior to pulling his vehicle over to the side of the road.
The Dunellen Police Department has had Narcan in service since July 1, 2015. All Dunellen police officers are trained in its use. The medication is stored along with an automated external defibrillator (AED) which is taken on patrol every shift.
